Over the Christmas break, I was just playing through a few of my Edison Long Players (as you do) and I got to thinking about the first two issues in the 10 inch series 10001 and 10002. I had always believed that the Long Playing records were dubbed from existing Edison recordings but these two records both sound as if they may be direct recordings. The orchestral sound does not have that sort of "boxy" acoustic that the other Long Players have and there is no aural evidence, that I can discern, of any side joins. Can anyone confirm if these were, in fact, direct recordings or did the Edison company just take a little more care with the dubbing of these two issues? Many thanks and compliments of the season to you all.
Regards

The two you mention were both dubbed onto a 10"LP disc. If you can give me the matrices, I can give you more info. Cesare Soldero was conductor on both of those discs.

Thanks for your reply, Bill, apologies for the delay in my response but I've had the devils own job trying to log-on to this forum. It refuses to believe I'm human, which seems to coincide with what my partner sometimes says about me!
I don't wish to put anyone to any trouble, it was just an idle thought based on listening to the first two 10 long playing discs - the sound is different from, say 10003, which is very clearly a dubbing.
The matrix nos. are on record no. 10001 are Matrix 12002-L-1-5 & 12003-L-1_8 and on record no.10002 the numbers are 12004-F-1-10 and 12005-j-1-4

According to Ray Wile, 12002 was dubbed on Sept.1.1926. 12003 was dubbed on Sept.17.1926. 12004 was also dubbed on Sept.1.1926 and 12005 on Aug.31.1926. All were dubbed from DD masters solely for LP pressings. Are there any other numbers scratched in the runoff such as 11119-A or 11120-A? These would give the actual recording date of the master.

Bill, Just for the sake of reference, the DD LPs that I own have the following matrix numbers: (as best I can make out)
10002 - 12004-F-1-2 and 12005-J-1-2 10002 (another copy) - 12004-F-1-6 and 12005-J-4-4 10004 - 12008-A-1-8 and 12009-B-1-8 10006 - 12029-A-4-2 and 12032-B-2-2 10008 - 12037-J-1-4 and 12038-A-1-4
This is the only info in the runoff area; I assume the format of it was kept from the regular DD issues.

Thanks for those matrices. I'll see if I can come up with a recording & coupling date for them.

Thanks for all your responses, the information received is very helpful. Bill - the only numbers scratched on the run-off that I can identify are those noted in my response of 6th Jan. Obviously, my supposition that the first two DDLPs may have been direct recordings is incorrect and I thank everybody who has taken the trouble to put me right. Regards to all
