Gents, Matt delivered my latest today, a lovely Edison H-19. OOH! nice-I like! The kids getting to know one another! I have noticed there is a marked difference in DD's of different years. The volume level and surface noise is very variable, more so I think that Victors. Matt gave me a quick primer on disc damage. I lucked out, I only have three sides or so I shouldn't play due to damage. Indianola is superb! As well as the Fred Van Eps sides. "Leave Me Your Love When Your Gone" is amazing for is clarity I almost thought Margaret Freer was in the room with me! Now I know why those Tone Tests were so successful! "Irish Rose O' My Heart" Allen McQuhae is another new favorite. BTW the McQuhae disc is unique at least as far as the DD's I currently Have in that it has different etched designs on the two sides, is that fairly common? Now I'm not ready to sell my Victor machines, but I must say I am very pleased with Mr. Edison's machine I can't help be curious, did the same Victor/Edison ribbing that we perpetuate going on back in the day? I don't mean corporate, but audiophile owner etc.? Thanks Matt! Regards, J. P.S. I now know what the "stick shift" on Diamond disc machines is for. P.P.S. Do I win a prize for the first post in the Diamond Disc Machine Section?

John, you don't exactly get a prize for having the first post in the DD machine section, but Vicious Vertical Rex will come by and slurp you with his tongue! What do you think of the Edison dance DDs? Isn't the sound great? Did you note the heavy emphasis on banjo? Rocky

Rocky,
Yes the banjo, chimes and voices esp. female are amazingly clear and life-like! Some of the etched label discs aren't very good quality-wise me thinks.

Yeah, it's the etched label DDs manufactured during World War I that sound awful--even the ones in Mint condition. I don't have many etched labels, since most of the good dance music is on paper label.

Gents, I have seen quite a few attachments for playing standard lateral records on Edison machines, but was there one designed for playing other vertical records such as Pathés, early Vocalions OkeHs and Grey Gulls? (Or would an attachment for a Victrola be a better bet?) Also being the paranoid sort: What do I look for on the DD stylus as far as damage as I go along? I do have a cheap loupe, I don't know the power. If I chip or wear the stylus can it be easily seen? From what I can see now it is conical and appears smooth, but I don't think the loupe is powerful enough to really check it properly. I love the lid support design-the one handed lock and release! That is an excellent design. It's much more convenient than Victor's lid support. The record storage slats do make me nervous though. The whole control handle business takes some getting used to for an old Vic man like me . I am amazed at how quiet the motor is! Is it just me or are the DDs on the 'Bay a bit pricey right now. I was bouncing around last night looking for some more DDs, because of the risks with DD's I think it would be safer to sick with known sellers. Regards, J. (for those of you who also belong to the Vic board-I thought for a while I'd post my scribblings about DDs on both boards for a while. We've got to pick it up here! )
