I'm new to the forum, and new to the world of Diamond Discs; I have a couple of 78 phonographs and an Amberola 30 but I just got my first DD player, an A-100 that I found on Craigslist for $75. The finish is in good shape and the motor seems to run well but it's got a few issues. There's a big split in the piece of trim to which the lid attaches, which is an issue I think I'll be able to fix. I also need to replace the diamond stylus (after doing some research it looks like I'll need to save my pennies for a while to do that!) and it needs a new crank. That's my question: did Edison use a unique crank for the A-100 or would it have been the same type as that used on other DD players? And does anyone have dimensions for the correct type crank? There are a few cranks available on eBay but none labeled as A-100 cranks. Any info would be appreciated; thank you!

I would guess you need the crank for that cabinet type to fit properly. You might be able to get one slightly longer and make due for a while.. I would go on the web to George Vollema, he has a lot of cranks, not exactly cheap though, or keep watching ebay for one labeled for that.. When I got a Jacobean case last year or so I didn't have the crank and by measuring how far inside the crank went till it screwed in the motor I was able to get one close to the right size till I broke down an paid the price for the right one.. It won't matter much, it will just be either a bit closer to the cabinet or a bit farther away but would serve the same purpose. As to the stylus, yes they are expensive an at the moment not very reliable. I take it the stylus is showing lines on the records? You don't want to play any decent record with one that is making noticeable change in the grooves or leaving a obvious scratch as it goes though the run off at the end. If you could find a reproducer that is known to have a decent stylus yet that might be your best bet till something better comes along, which hopefully soon will happen.

Larry Larry, thanks for the reply. I'll measure the case and see if I can find a crank that will work; I think that I will be able to figure out which cranks on eBay are from DD players and will thread into the motor. I'll also keep an eye out for a reproducer with a good stylus. As for checking for lines on records, it's a bit beyond that. The guy who sold me the machine tried to demo it using a DD record that looked like it had been left lying in the street for a week; it barely produced any sound and when I looked at the reproducer I could see that the stylus had been totally worn or chipped off. There's no point on it at all anymore, it's basically worn flush with the metal stylus mount. Frank
