Hello,
A couple of weeks ago I purchased a local C19 in fair shape. This is my first phonograph. I've been fixing the cabinet (more damage than I first thought) and have removed the motor for service. After cleaning up the motor and baseplate I am ready to grease and oil the machine. I've read through both the owner's manual and the service manual but I'm still unsure of a couple of things.
1) The oil tubes that have the exposed felt wicks aren't in contact with (or in some cases near) the points I'd assume need the oil. Should the wicks be above and touching the parts that need oil?
2) On page 10, Step 10 (c) G, it talks about putting oil in the "Oil tube to spring sleeve (oil freely)." I don't see an oil tube there. The pictures in the manual are too small and dark to make out well. Where should the oil go?
3) The exposed oil cup (on the left side of the motor) is tilted forward. I assume it should be horizontal and was bent at some time in the past. Is that correct?
Sometime in the past this machine took a sharp blow that drove the horn into the motor. The brass looking "sector" that rides on the worm gear to advance the reproducer was bent left and downward. The horn has a crease where the shield in front of the governor impacted. The shield was bent toward the governor. I straightened it but I really don't know if that is correct.
I also have the original bill of sale so I'm curious if there is a database someone keeps of the SN and sales date since no company records seem to exist. I'm used to the classic car world where SNs and dates are a big deal.
Thanks in advance,
Joe

Hello Joe,
Yes, there's a fellow who is developing a database for these machines, but I don't know if he monitors this forum. If you post your serial and the date on the bill of sale, I'll be sure he gets it. Thanks,
George P.

1.) The oil tube wicks should definitely be close to their designated points.
2.) As I do not have the manual, I am not sure to which part it refers. There is a tube to the spring arbor bearing, if I recall correctly...
3.) The oil cup should be generally level: it is more important, though, that the lower ends should go where they are intended.

It has a spring loaded ball on the end I believe. That one? (edit:I missed another tube on the in board motor as well. Also with a spring loaded ball) I tried to post a picture but can't figure out how to post directly from the machine instead of a link.
