I plan on buying some on Ebay, but only over here in Australia. They dont come up very often here though. There is 2 on there at the moment, and ones quite early, but with an opening bid of $50 each theres no way I'll be getting them. Cylinders are far cheaper and more plentiful on our ebay.

Yeah, cylinders on ebay, are expensive, when sold indivdually. Even the DD's are the same way. Especially, when the seller knows what they have. Where as a seller who does not, know, what they have. Will sell them cheaply. Unfortunealty, the cheaper the cylinders, and discs. The poorer the condition, and quality. The better the condition, and quality. The higher the price.

Not always. There's a seller named Baltic who lists her cylinders at $6.99 and they are graded accurately. Cylinders that are expensive are usually the ones that are in demand--well-known songs, topical songs, Christmas songs, dance band, and cylinders above 5000 (often undeservedly).
Sure, you're not likely to find many cylinders or diamond discs on Ebay at the low prices that many sellers ask for their 78 RPMs, but if you keep your eyes open, you will find some good deals on Ebay.

Yes, but once you factor in, the shipping costs at say, $4.50. Your spending almost $11.00 for one cylinder, or one disc. Me personally, and this is just my opinion, but I can't see spending that much for one cylinder, or one disc. Now, as a "Lot" I could.

Paul, that's a valid point about the postage and handling. It's not too bad if I'm getting a lot of records at once, but postage hurts if it's just one item. On many occasions I've submitted bids on numerous items and only won one!
If you purchase from sellers like Nickjay78 and Bartrade, they will let you accumulate records to save postage.

If I can buy more then one record, then I can see justifying the postage.
Thank you for giving me the names, of two ebay sellers as well.

Paul,
If you can, you might want to attend the upcoming phono shows in NJ & CT. You can get cylinders there usually for under $8.00 except the aforementioned ones by Rocky(unless you are extremely lucky!!) and unlike Ebay, you can visually inspect them and many sellers will be happy to let you preview the record if they have the proper machine.

Thanks Bill. NJ & CT are still some distance from me.
Although I wish there was a show in Maryland. Probbably not enought interest for one, though.

It's about 5 hrs for me to the NJ show, but we get a hotel a few weeks before and stay overnight. It must be the same driving time or less for you if you were willing to stay over. Bill

Get on NickJay's list, he often sells records at a fixed price and the DD's I bought from him were all accurately graded and at bargain prices. Talk about shipping, he is amazing.
I do not buy DD's any more on eBay unless I know the person can grade. Dave Jolley and Herman Wedemire are also very good to buy from, they both normally make recordings so you can hear them and both are honest. With a DD you have to use a strong light and look at the bottom of the grooves, if you see gray or brown the condensite is gone. Normally you can tell the condition of the record from the label, but I got one with a good label that was worn out, that was the last one I got from eBay. By the time you pay shipping both ways it is not worth returning a DD.
