Is there anything unusual about a 3 screw bedplate? Was this just a later feature of a late model A. Mine left factory around Oct 05. Thanks in advance

The Edison Phono Works seems to have been experimenting with the number of screws for Standards during 1905/06. The factory sent out Model Bs with 3, 4, and 5 screws securing the bedplate to the motor frame. Seems kind of odd, but someone must have thought there was good reason for this. Production soon reverted to 4 screws - - one in each corner.

Thanks again George. Thought it unusual when I saw it? On eBay someone has a 3 screw machine and indicated rare or unusual? I figured just a manufacturing change or improvement.... Who knows what the reasons were..

That explains something: on the Standard B I got recently, I was puzzled by the presence of a fifth screw hole on the bedplate, with no corresponding hole in the wooden frame...

Wow, I knew about the 5 screw since I have a 5 screw machine Ser.#440973 (April 1907)., but I did not know about the 3 screw. Can we get a pic up here of what the 3 screw bedplate looks like?? I would love to see it. ) Tony K.

One is worn off, but other is there. Front of course has the tufts with screws over them. One is worn there also.

Looking at my notes, the earliest instance I've seen a 3 screw mount for a bedplate is # 229646 (a model A machine). The latest is #277672 (a model B machine). In the intervening numbers are also 4 screw and 5 screw mounts. After that everything seems to be 5 screw mounted. My guess about the experimenting of screw position had something to do with optimal strength or survival of the rather flimsy wood bedplate frame. As we know in this day of ebay, it's the first thing that gets destroyed in shipping. By the way, Steve - very nice late model A! Regards, Martin

Thank you Martin! Unit is all original, horn, crank, shaver, and I would say, mint case and perfect banner.. These are really great machines. I am amazed out how well they are made. I think this one was maybe wrapped in a blanket and kept in a closet for decades...
