I recently purchased an Edison Standard model A with a 2 minute model C reproducer. What cylinders will play on this machine? I see so many different ones available, but I don't know what to look for... Amberolas, Blue Amberolas, brown ones, black ones... purple ones. Also, is there a good, reliable source for cylinder records? I'd like to pick up a few, but I am looking for appropriate ones at an affordable price. Any input would be much appreciated!
Thanks! Ed.

First off: does your model A have a 2/4 minute attachment? This was a common upgrade for Edison owners from 1908 on.
The model C reproducer was primarily designed for the 2 minute black wax cylinders, but 2 minute celluloid cylinders are also appropriate.
For brown wax cylinders, an earlier, lighter reproducer, such as an Automatic or model B, is considered best.
Neither the wax Amberol cylinders nor the Blue Amberols can be played on a 2 minute only machine: if you do have the 2/4 minute attachment, these should be played with a model H.

It is just a 2 minute model C reproducer, not a 2/4 minute. So it sounds like just the plain black wax 2 min cylinders will be appropriate. Is the 2/4 attachment just a simple piece that you add to allow the machine to play longer 4 min cylinders? I know there is a difference in groove size, so that's a concern. Thanks for the tips!

The 2/4 minute attachment consists of a gear cluster that attaches to the top of the existing gear to the left of the mandrel (the gear cover must be removed). By means of a shifter, the speed of the hindmost gear is cut in half, so the carriage and reproducer move laterally at half the speed of the 2 minute setting. You're right about groove side; 4 minute has 200 tpi while 2 minute is 100 tpi. Everything is cut in half for 4 minute except rotation speed - - that's always 160 rpm. With half the groove size, 4 minute cylinders require a stylus half the size of 2 minute cylinders, so two reproducers are necessary. This is all explained in the article cited above.
