I just thought I would share some photos of my latest toy - a hand-cranked Edison Shaving Machine: Cleaned it up, replaced one of the belts, freed the blade assembly (it had been frozen pretty solid), and replaced the chipped blade with one from the shaver on my Home. Turns quite nicely, but I haven't tried it on a blank yet. BillS

Very nice. I love these early hand cranked shavers.
Congratulations! Andreas

Shavers are just for taking a layer of wax off of a blank to prepare the surface for a new recording. I use one from 10-20 hours a week, shaving new blanks.

Update:
After some destructive testing with an old blank, I have given the chipped blade to a local jeweler, to see whether it can be replicated or resharpened.
One feature that I find rather odd is the absence of a fine adjustment for depth of cut, as was present on the Home attachment. I think I might try to rig a screw adjustment, using fine threaded components (if I can find such)....

So far, my few home recordings have been simple recitations. However, where I work, there are a number of musical talents: if I could persuade some of them to try recording...

Yes: but unfortunately Mr. Hendrix is no longer available to make live recordings... ;-)

It would be wonderful to find someone to make new blades for these shavers. I know that a steel blade can be used, and even glass. But a new sapphire would be best. I use 2 shavers, one for rough shaving (when I make blanks they are 2.4" thick and shaved down to 2.195".) I have at times made over 1000 blanks in a year, and so have worn out shaver blades before, and that causes set backs, as nobody seems to carry new blades. So when they are worn, instead of purchasing a new blade one has to find another Ediphone or Dictaphone unit.

Sounds expensive. What do these blades look like.

They look like a small chisel, but instead of being metal they are sapphire.

It would work, but yes, sharpen often. It would be much better to have sapphire, if available. For instance I shave at least 10 to 15 cylinders a week, (now that it is a hobby), and the sapphires still last many years, even with as much abuse as I give it. Each new blank goes from 2.3" down to 2.190" I made my blanks this way to ensure less surface defects and also to combat warping.
