I used to have another sad one on brown wax titled Baby's evening prayer. It was redone, and, I now have it by the same two singers, Harlan, and, Stanley, on Edison two minute black wax. On earlier one, they used a single instrument, a piano. On the black wax they used an orchestra. Very moving song about a wife leaving home on a train to meat a secret lover, taking her young girl with her. She left her husband feeling dejected at home. Here is the chorus. "God bless my mama, and, my papa, too. Make them love each-other, always right, and, true. Keep them from danger,............................... May the angels guide their footsteps." was baby's prayer......" Sorry. Forgot one line in the song. Bill Cahill

There are quite a few sad ones out there. Another one that comes to mind is The Mississippi Flood, Disc #52088, sung by Vernon Dalhart. I believe its about the 27 flood, but I could be mistaken.

I'm not familiar with The Vacant Chair. Another sad one in my collection is The Sinking of The lusitania, 1915 Columbia. The music is upbeat for such a sad subject.

The first Blue Amberol I ever heard - when I travelled 600 miles (!) to collect an Amberola 30 - was "Why Don't Santa Claus Bring Something To Me?", sung by Billy Williams (23146).
So sad!!!
I was hoping for a happy ending when the lad found his Xmas presents. But no...

There's "The Letter Edged in Black", of course: but what about "In the Baggage Coach Ahead" (another Dalhart record)?
On a Diamond Disc, I think "Mr. Radio Man" is a bit of a tear-jerker: an updated version of "Hello, Central, Give Me Heaven"...

I now have "In the baggage coach ahead" on BA by Vernon Dalhart, and, company. The one mentioned up there by Billy Williams. That was one of many pseudo names Billy Murray used. In fact, Billy Murray was also a pseudo name. He also used the name Cyrus Pippins on an Edison Lateral Cut in 1929. It was on the label, and, in the comical recording....
