Figured I'd post this in case anyone might be interested:
This March marks the 75th anniversary of Sousa's death, which occured right here in my hometown of Reading, PA. To remember his life and his achievements, there will be a number of Sousa events where I'll be presenting a program AS SOUSA, and/or taking part in (as Matt Brown) with tuba in hand. If anyone is interested in any of these, let me know and I can probably get you some tickets:
Friday Feb. 2 at 8pm
St. James Episcopal Church in Lancaster, PA
This program will feature me as Sousa, and will be full of lots of stories, pictures, and music (original cylinders and discs played on antique phonographs, of course). I'll also have the original 1893 Sousaphone there (yes, the very first one!), on which I'll be playing a Theme and Variations composed by Sousa. World-reknowned trumpeter Rodney Mack (www.rodneymack.com) will be on hand to deliver a rendition of "The Carnival of Venice" a-la Herbert L. Clarke, and local Soprano Amy Yovanovich will be performing several of Sousa's seldom-heard songs.
More info on this concert here: www.paacademymusic.com/perform-calendar.php
Thursday, March 1 at 9am
I'll be giving a presentation at the Berks Historical Society. Again, I'll be portraying Mr. Sousa at this event, and will have pics, recordings, and the Sousaphone on hand.
Tuesday March 6 at 5:30
I'll be playing with the Ringgold Band (the last band Sousa conducted) in a concert that will re-create what would have been Sousa's last. Info here: berkshistory.org/events/sousa.html
More to come!
