John,
Interesting video. His facts in some instances are a bit off, but not bad. I wonder if he realizes he's sitting on a 5K + machine! I notice also that it's missing the auto-shutoff assembly which he's probably unaware of. That cylinder is called "Characteristic Negro Medley #1876 by the Peerless Quartet," and is one of the more "offensive" by today's standards. He better watch out for Sharpton & Jackson to come a knockin'!

Bill, A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. ;D ;D ;D Yeah he's got the basics, but he takes them in some funny directions. ;D I particularly liked the bit about how "They" have always been very good entertainers or something along those lines. ;D I almost fell out of my chair. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D. You'll notice I kept my comment purely technical. While I'm on a YouTube jag, how 'bout this clip-do you fellows think I nailed it regarding what type phonograph? "Wind-Up Phonograph" Not that it was to tough. ;D Regards, J. ;D

A XI would be my guess also. Heh, he looks old enough to be the original owner!!!!! I wonder what Brunswick tune he's playing.

It's a XI, no doubt about it. That back flange must be hard as a rock; it looks just like the one that was on my machine's sound box, with that gray color, original IMO and about 85 years old. I shudder to think what the gaskets must look like!

Bill, That's Farewell Blues By Isham Jones' Orch. I have it-great recording. Original owner! ;D heh, heh I like that. Henry, I'm always amazed that some people don't seem to even consider that if something has rubber parts and those parts are dried out, then maybe it'd be a good idea to replace 'em. They would replace gaskets on a car engine. There's a fellow who is recording and placing his whole collection of 78's on YouTube and he thinks any restoration or repair of his little VV-IV (Or VV-VI I can't remember) will reduce the value of it! I'll find and post a link to his clips this week-end. Regards, J.

Gents, Here they are, or at least the two part introduction to his project: Victrola Project & Victrola Project 2 and one his recordings: Ponselle- Suicidio! In the second clip you get a glimpse of how bad the gaskets are on the Sound-Box. I see he's also got one of those retro phongraph combinations now as well. He's a nice fellow, I corresponded with him via private message a bit about his clips, but was unable to convince him that he needs to service his VV-IV Regards, J.

Even with the scuzzy gaskets and back flange, Ponselle's voice comes through like gangbusters! But think how much better it would sound with a rebuild. BTW, what the heck is all that furze on the tt felt? Looks like he's growing a colony of mushrooms there.
I was interested in one comment, that "Suicidio" should be played at c. 81 rather than 78. Of course, we don't know what his tt's playback speed was anyway. But assuming it's 78, makes her low register a bit less impressive than it sounds there than if it were played back at higher speed. It doesn't seem like he's very particular about the equipment; he may not even know what a strobe disk is, much less how to use it. Or whether he is musician enough to be able to determine how far off the recorded pitch level is from what's in the score. But I don't want to open up that whole can of worms!!

Henry, Yeah that felt is pretty bad! He doesn't want to replace it though. I agree as bad as that Sound-Box is his recording sound pretty good. I think he'd be floored if he had it re-built and lubed the motor. He's doing the best he can on the other side of the microphone but seems to be indifferent about this side of it. I never thought to ask his if he's got a strobe. Regards, J.

I just discovered that I have a rare Edison Cylinder number 4M-431 (Characteristic Negro Medley by Peerless Quartet) Amberol- 4 min disc in my collection.. Anyone know where I can find info on what this is worth? or how rare it is? I can see several refs toa newer version of the recording, but none with this number... Also it has "PAT'D.. 14" showing on the rim.. The Cycinder is in great shape with no cracks and pretty clean, but the case has no bottom, and shows light mold damage on it. The outer skin of the top label is missing as well.

The outer skin of the top label is missing as well. I assume you have a wax Amberol - there were some early Blue Amberols that were pressed from wax moulds - this selection was released in May 1910. The dots and number after the 'PAT'D' indicate the take number and the mould number: this would indicate your record was take 2, from mould #14. As for rarity and value: that is dependent on what a buyer would pay for that particular cylinder. Your best indicator is to check on sites like eBay for that title. Bill
