Folks, I'm attempting to rebuild the sound-box from a Berg Artone portable. The potmetal is still solid but it is showing cracks. I was unable to melt the solder holding the needle-bar in place. The gasket material is cardboard on one side and there was flat rubber on the other. What I was thinking was using JB Weld as a sort of spackle to fill, and hopefully, stabilize the cracks in the shell. The gasket I think I can cut from sheet rubber. I'm really unsure if I should try again to separate the needle-bar from the diaphragm. Ideas? The turntable was frozen on the spindle due to a swollen potmetal center piece I think. I used the trick of having someone lift the machine by the turntable and tapping on the spindle lightly with a hammer. Seems to have been successful. The potmetal of the TT centerpiece is much better material, swollen but uncracked. Regards, J.

Gents, I cleaned and buffed the shell pieces last night, it brought the cracking into greater relief. It does seem solid enough, my biggest concern is the screw holes for the needle-bar pivot, the cracks are right up to the holes. There is cracking around the screw holes for the back plate, but it would be a lot easier to fix those than the pivot points. I figured out the needle bar simply unscrewed from the nut that is soldered on the diaphragm. It seems a weird connection, the nut isn't centered, the amount of solder seems excessive and the carbon soot on the rear of the diaphragm all make me wonder if this wasn't repaired before. Regards, J.
