The red star labels were titles edison thought would not sell, and once a dealer ordered them they could not be returned.

If you are interested, you can read more about that here. One of the members on The Talking Machine Forum had me cut out one to use for his avatar. If I did not know better, though, I would have thought that these were the popular ‘singles’, to use more modern popular music parlance. — MordEth

i have a dozen or so red starred DDs in my collection and i find them rather facsinating tunes to listen to...One that i cant believe is a red star is BILLY JONES TUNE IN ON LOVE...still cant figure out why edison red starred a Billy Jones record? thats odd to me because he was one of edison most favorite performers. (flipside is in NINENTEEN NINTEY NINE by AL BERNARD)

I've got that record too - fun listening!! It's probably red starred because of the 'radio' theme and that Edison himself hated radio, deeming it as a mere fad that would die off with the Ovaltine company!! Needless to say we can STILL buy radios AND Ovaltine, but not so much as a graphite pencil with the Edison name on it - shame shame
