I have several indestructable cylinders that look to be in great shape. They start playing fine on both my Amberola 30 and 50. After a few seconds they repeat the last word or two and continue on doing the same thing.
Any idea why they do this? The edison Blue Amberol cylinders play just fine.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!
Thanks!

It sounds like your Indestructables might be the 2-minute variety. Make sure it says "4M" on the rim.

Yes, George is right... Make sure they say "4M"... The "4M" 4-minute cylinders are meant for the Amberola 30 and Amberola 50.

Albany/Columbia/Oxford Indestructible cylinders (1907-1922) 2-minute and 4-minute tend to "shrink" with age due to the Camphor chemical that is in the plastic that evaporates over the decades. They usually shrink at the very beginning and the very end of the cylinder. You can usually tell a Indestructible cylinder has shrunk just by looking at it sometimes, if the plastic has "pushed out and lifted" beyond the bottom metal ring of the cylinder...That's usually the "tell-tale" sign other than playing it.

I just saw what tlarson88 describes happen today and I realized that the cylinder was advancing slightly off the mandrel because of the aforementioned swelling issue. To test I held my finger lightly on the end of the cylinder as it played and it did not do it again. Cleaned the light rust off the rings after that.
