Hello everyone. I was hoping for some advice here. I am an owner of a Maroon GEM with combination model K reproducer so I know a little about the operation. I recently found a beautiful Edison Model F with combination model S reproducer. Fired it up and the unit was running great. All of the sudden on the 4 min end I am getting an echo and the song will not advance forward. All the gearing is set to 4 minute so no problem. I switch everything to 2 minute and the 2 minutes records work fine. Just a problem with the 4 minute. It played the 4 minute well with no issues for a day. The gearing is fine on the machine. I never heard an echo before. I'm thinking it's a reproducer problem. I also checked the records on my Maroon GEM and they are fine. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks! Bob

Just to be clear, there are Model F Standards, Model F Homes, and Model F Triumphs. Yours is a Standard.
It's difficult to be sure from the description, but the problem could be the lateral movement of the reproducer. If you haven't already done so, lubricate the hinge block with a light sewing machine oil - no Three-In-One or other paraffin-based stuff. You want the weight to be able to move freely from side-to-side.
Also, be sure the stylus bar is not hung up/out of alignment.
When you write, "...the song will not advance forward" do you mean the turn of the groove repeats and the carriage does not advance? If so, that's not a reproducer problem.
Good luck - -

Thank you George. Sorry for my poor clarity. Everything is well lubricated. If I have the gearing set for 2 minutes on the Standard, and the S reproducer rotated to the 2 minute mark, it plays a 2m record with the greatest of ease. Rotate to 4 minute, set gearing to 4 minute and I hear an echoing sound and terrible sound quality on a 4m record.

Sounds like a worn out stylus. Bill Cahill

If you put the S Reproducer on the Gem and set everything to 4-minute, I'll assume the same thing happens? I'm also assuming this happens on several of your 4-minute records - not just one.
Since it was working properly on the 4-minute setting when you first got it, something has changed. Again, be sure the weight moves laterally with ease. Also, be sure the 4-minute stylus bar is not hung up on the link or otherwise jammed up.
Finally, is there a chance that a record was slid onto the mandrel while the carriage was in the lower (playing) position? That's a fast way to break off a stylus.

Just figured it out. I have an extra Model K Reproducer for my Maroon Gem. I didn't think it would fit on the Standard Model F since the S Reproducer is so much bigger. To my surprise it fit nicely. The Standard Model F worked perfectly so it's a bad stylus. Just shipped it out for rebuild. Thank you again for your help! Bob
