I have just joined this board, but I am not altogether a novice where Edison phonographs are concerned, since I bought a Model A Standard (for GBP5.00) when I was twelve years old and kept it for nearly fifty years. During this time I installed a combination attachment and a Model R reproducer, whose larger diaphragm gave a vast improvement in tone over the original Model C. Times grew hard and at last I had to sell the machine – I think it went to Singapore – but I have just acquired a Model B, rather shabby but mechanically sound (again with a combination attachment) and only requiring a reproducer. As to this, I am delighted to say that I have found another Model R; remarkably enough, this is coming from the same man who sold me the previous one 35 years ago! I have still got most of my old cylinders and am eagerly looking forward to hearing them again when the reproducer arrives.
Incidentally, I formerly used the Model R for both 2-minute and 4-minute cylinders, obviously changing the stylus as necessary; the 2-minute bar fitted perfectly and I never had any problems with either tracking or cylinder wear. I hope the new reproducer will be equally co-operative.
