I am restoring an Edison Fireside Model B cylinder phonograph and the latest issue involves the reproducer and stylus. When I tested it on a couple of cylinders there was a clear echo about 350 ms after the primary sound. This is consistent with a rotation speed of about 160 rpm. This is often a symptom of a worn out stylus that is sampling more than one groove at a time. How does a working diamond B stylus actually look like? The photo that I have seen are not detailed enough. What is the tip of the stylus made of. I have assumed the Diamond in the name is just marketing.
I am hoping there is a expert on the forum who can help with these questions. I have attached a link to a macro photo of my stylus, which perhaps can help with the assessment. Here is the link to the photo good Claude (I don't see the link, so I guess I am missing some step in posting a link to the photo.)

The stylus is indeed diamond: it should be a smooth, rounded point. A flat spot will reflect the light, and look like a "facet".

Make sure the screw that is on the top at the end of the Reproducer is not tight. The reproducer weight at the bottom needs to be able to move from side to side (horizontally).. If it can't, Then it will also cause an echo...just like a worn stylus does.. Tony K. ) Edison Collector/Restorer....

I sent the reproducer to Wyatt Markus in New York and he found the screw at the end of the Reproducer frozen. He fixed that and replaced the diaphragm and it works great. He did an excellent job and I sent it to New York on Monday and it returned polished and working 6 days later. The stylus was in good shape and did not need replacement. The sound now is very solid. To complete the project I still need a new spring for the motor, a governor, hand brake, crank and a horn crane. I am able to test it because i have mounted a small DC motor on it. A test of its sound using the monster Edison Standard horn is on Vimeo. See link below. There is still a long way to go, but this serves as a proof of principal.
