Just a quick question- is the wooden knob on the handle of an amberola 30 the same size and shape as what's use on a diamond disc winder?
While I think of it too- I recently saw an amberol 30 grille on ebay. It was a repro made of oak. Are they supposed to be wood, or woodgrained metal?

Shane,
The knob on the crank of my Amb. 50 is about the same size as the knob on the gold DD crank I got from Bill for my H-19.
Which grille are talking about? The front grille or top one? They are both wood on the 50. I think the front one, at least, on the is wood. (probably both)
Regards, J.

Yeh John, the front (horn) grille. I remember seeing a very small amberola years ago, which had both grilles made of metal. I don't know if it was a 30 though. Ive just scored a motor board grille off ebay which is supposed to be original black japanned and looks like its metal?? It may have been an earlier model that had the woodgrained metal front grille though. I think the top section of the horn was also woodgrained too. Easy to see I've never had anything to do with amberola's before!! Glad to hear the knobs are the same. I noticed today my home B knob is pretty much the same dimensions as all my DD's, so I might start making a knob to match for when my 30 finally gets here.

Shane,
I'm just going by a Google image search. ;D The Amberola 30's I've found have a japanned top grille and what looks to be a wood front grille. The Amberola X and DX (or at least the ones I've found on-line) have a wood grained metal front grille. There are many variation of the early Amberolas I think, but the 30's and 50's are pretty standard (I think!) ;D

Cool! I think it must have been an "X" that I saw- It's hard to remember exactly- I'm going back over 25 years. I think I've found an original grille, but I'll have to check it out. I'm pacing the floor waiting for the 30 to arrive, then I can shoot down the Gold Coast with it, and see if it fits. If not ,I'll order one from Brian (Brisnake) on ebay. Half the veneer won't be original, so I don't mind if I end up with a repro grille. I'll have to stop buying all these machines and records,(and dusters and needle tins and catalogues and gaskets and diaphrams and soundboxes and decals ) and invest in a good Edison book one of these days.

The 30 has a metal front grill that is painted to look like wood.
