Gents, Is it just me or does it seem like there's always at least one big spender prowling around on the 'Bay. I buy most of my records from two sources, one being Bartrade, (using his listings as an example) I tend to go through his listings if not every night nearly so. It seems like there is always one or two bidders out there who will spend big bucks for even common-ish stuff for a while then disappear only to be replaced by others. I won't list the names here, I think most everyone has seen some of these buyers of whom I speak. Right now there are two in particular out-bidding me on nearly everything. Regards, J.

I know the feeling John. We've got a couple here too. It would be nice to have $1,000,000 in the bank, and get anything you wanted at any price. I saw a bunch of Chinese pathes the other day, and got out-bid on every one except the last one. When it came to last one, I entered a huge snipper bid at the end, and thankfully got it for a quarter of what it could have gone up to. I kind of thought I'd miss out on it to,because they were averaging over $100 each for the previous 10 or so,but somehow got it for $50?? Maybe the other guys felt sorry for me and decided to let me have just one.

John, I know what you mean! Are you referring to a bidder whose Ebay name begins with a "B"? And another that begins with a "J"?
;D

Rocky, No, I'm getting beat-out by two new ones, one begins with a G and the other K. Old "J" is still around sniping me on a regular basis too Regards, J.

I've noticed that records have been getting pretty pricey, lately. Parts for machines are the same way and often you can win a bid on a machine cheaper than you can get a part for it. . .

Ortho...,
I've had no luck at all with phono parts at all and I am losing more records than I used to.

We're competing with buyers all over the planet when we bid on Ebay auctions. All it takes are a few additional collectors with an Ebay account anywhere on earth who have a few extra bucks in their pocket and they can jack up the price of our goodies! I guess it just plain pays to be filthy rich! Rocky

You've got that right Rocky. I think the only way to get somethings that you really really want, is to put in a rediculously high snipper bid at the end, and hope there's not someone crazier than you bidding too.

If you plan on sniping, don't bother if GKMNEWPORT is high bidder, unless you want to spend more than a $1,000 for a DD!

Rocky,
I can't even comprehend spending that kind of money on anything! It's just ridiculous!

John, I can't relate to this discussion at all because the vast majority of my 78s were acquired either as gifts from friends who were unloading their closets and couldn't bear to toss them in the trash, or very cheaply at thrift shops, or, in the case of some of my oldest Victor Grand Prize and bat wing Red Seals, passed down in the family. I don't think I would ever buy a record (or anything else) on eBay, because I like to pick up, see, feel, examine, work, test, etc., etc., stuff that I buy, like phonographic or photographic items, before I plunk down the "elusive spondulix." I can't imagine wanting or needing anything that would come up on eBay, although I do visit there from time to time just to see what's listed at what prices, and to marvel at the egregious ignorance of many sellers ("I don't know anything about cameras, but this one seems to be working perfectly," etc., or "This rare old Edison Victrola [sic!] was manufactured in 1904"---you get the idea). But I deplore what eBay has done to camera shows in the Delaware Valley area, i.e., rendered them practically extinct, and the perverted effect that it's had on prices.
End of rant....

Henry,
Unfortunately for me the 'Bay is a necessary evil. I would have about twenty records if I only got them here in Boston. It seems that 78 especially older then 1940 are nearly extinct here abouts. Had I gotten into the hobby while a teen I'd be all set now ;D
I do try to keep my expenditure per record down below $3.00 on average. I had limited my purchases to a few trusted sellers, but now with the BA's et al. I have had to branch out and up the ante a bit. I've been lucky so far (knock wood!).
I would very much prefer to inspect and listen to my purchases ahead of time, but I do pretty good. You can get lucky with those "I don't know how it sounds" etc sellers, but I do tend to avoid them myself. I haven't been lucky enough to have a lot of 78's come to me from family and friends. I have been offered a lot of LPs and I have a friend who always buys 40's stuff he finds at Goodwill type shops for me. I told him to never spend more than a dollar a record.
Regards, J.
