Rocky, No, I'm getting beat-out by two new ones, one begins with a G and the other K. Old "J" is still around sniping me on a regular basis too Regards, J. Geez, I hope you don't mean me, mine starts with a "j". I've taken a break from Bart for awhile anyway as I've picked up way too many records and DDs lately, most of them from private sources, not ebay. I know the "k" person was outbidding me on almost everything Bart had listed recently, and willing to spend A LOT of money, I did a little "test" on one DD to find out, it was over $50 Like I said John, I hope it wasn't me, I don't like competing with phono-friends for records on ebay! Now over on the other board, I know of a number of people who don't care who's bidding and will snipe ya no matter what. This one don't play dat game! Sean

At least everyone knows when Im bidding ;D Im too lazy to think up another name. 99% of my computer stuff is under the name "Gramophoneshane". I unfortunately only know 2 OTVMMB members Ebay names, so I hope I dont run the price up or snip anyone here. Actually, if I see something I know someone has been wanting- even if I want it to, I send an email to tell them its there and wont bid! Theres always another one around the corner eventually- plus its a good way to test the "pricing" waters. I told Mario about a couple cylinders I saw for his school model, which he won. Now I know about what to expect them to go for, and wont get carried away in a bidding war & pay 5 times as much when the next ones come along. I've even printed out the list of school cylinders, and am now marking off what Mario has, so I know what to bid on, or tell him about. I'd rather see things like that go towards completing his school out-fit, than buy them, and have them sit here away from where they belong. I hope I didn't bid against any of you guys for the black paper label "Buddah" DD I won yesterday. Thankfully, I've only had a problem with 2 regular snippers here, but it only took a couple weeks to put a stop to them ;D

Don't feel bad, John, the "other" J has outbid me on tons o' stuff too, my new thinking is "well, I'm saving money by NOT getting it!" Sean

Sean, I don't recall seeing you bidding in any of Bart's auctions. Of course you said you're taking a break so I may have simply forgotten. For the most part I try not to bid against someone I know, but sadly I must admit there are a few times I've bid against someone I know from one of the boards. I am a shellac sinner-what can I say! . I am trying to be better. Regards, J.

Don't worry ' bout me, John! As I was saying to Rocky last night, I'm not looking to get every record on the planet, even though it may seem as such! When I'm out picking through collections locally, I usually grab things I've already got either to upgrade copies of my own or to pass along to collector friends. We'll have to talk one of these days about "stuff" you're looking for, I'm always trying to "lighten" my load of extras! I've finally again resorted to selling records on ebay that are of no interest to me or anyone I know and I've gotta tell ya, it's amazing what these people have been paying for Greek 78s I've had for sale lately! This is an interesting discussion.. I wish I had the over 1,200 edisons new in the envelopes I had in the early 60's.. As I recall I sold them for about 15 cents each.. The walnut Louis XV went for 40.00. Well thats whats past.. I too am shocked and probably guilty of spending too much on a few records, most of which have not been up to par for my taste. This kind of group is going to have its difficulties because we all want the same item, and only one of us is going to get it.. I would have loved to have had the Trio set sold to our member, and bid way more than I thought I would and still he feels he got a bargin.. so price is something different for each person. The day of getting anything much worth while cheap on ebay seems to be over. I purchased a whole set of hymns yesterday, no one wanted for 1.99 each just to hear them at least once. And hopefully they will have a good surface. I had so many albums of 78's that I purchased cheap in the old days, and then to have room gave literally walls of them away to charitys.. No one really wanted them.. I didn't really think any one every would want old classical pieces from the 30's. I was sure wrong on that one. But then I recall having the Large Bombay shaped Sonora I see going for real bucks as well an many other fine machines, I got rid of. Well I enjoyed them at the time.. My thoughts on the records is that yes they may cost more now, but hopefully in 10 years they may be worth even more yet when you sell them.. I do recall a saying something like " you purchase a record at a garage sale for 50 cents, put it on ebay and it brings 100.00, you pass away and your relatives have another yard sale and it sells for 50 cents again..

Sean I'm looking for part 3/4 of Metropolis on Victor (I forget the number). I paid $3 for part 1/2 at Union a few years ago from a crazy record guy on the back porch. I would like to find the rest of it . A 1924 Rhapsody in Blue and a second copy of the 1927 would be great too. ;D Anything with Russ Columbo or Al Bowlly? Also, I'd love some late 20's hot dance band tunes.

Hey Don,
I just might have some Bowlly dupes. One collection a few years ago had dozens of Noble / Bowlly HMVs in it. Give me some time to check around the "stacks", as they say. I admit, though, I pulled anumber of them out already and filled three of my 10-50 carriers with them, so who knows what's left.
I don't have anything but one set of Metropolis, funny, though I know who you got the one part from. Too bad I can't go this year to see him swilling his whiskey, er, medication down. Need to sink money into house stuff and not any more records!
I'll tell you what, after I find an acoutsic "Blue" for myself, you can have the next one I find! ;D
So Larry,
There are plenty of records to go around, still. I only wanted those three classical DD sets because A) I've never ever seen them, B) they were all nice pieces I've never seen on DD and C) they're very late (1928) electric issues! You won't see my "high rolling" on many records ever. I can't justify it unless we're talking mega rare and I have to have it. It doesn't happen often. Did you see the two Roth String Quartet DDs went for over $180? My max on the two I won was $185 for each set, I came up with guesstimates from market prices in the classical realm, mostly OFF of ebay through private dealers, although none I know of except one had ever seen any of these DDs, so that should tell us all something WRT rarity. Besides, I really wanted them!
Sean (35,000 + in my collection! And you wonder why I'm thinning stuff out?)

35,000 is a large amount for sure.. Just yesterday I was wondering exactly what about accumulating records appeal to me.. I too have had very large amounts at times.. In thinking about it I think I enjoy the hunt and then hearing a new piece more than actually owning all those.. I would be curious how often someone plays that many records very often? Which of course isn't really the idea anyway.. When I was young I used to have a victor catalog and crossed off every record I found and foolishly thought maybe one day I would own the majority of them.. Then reality set in.. You can only play so many at a time.. You have to store them somewhere.. I moved several times and they just were a real pain to move huge quanities of them.. But still here I am again purchasing records.. And for the same reason. I enjoy hearing them once at least, some more.. I sold off 25 boxes of more than 100 each through Stantons a number of years ago. Many excellent selections in fine shape.. But no ebay or computer for me at that point. I would think someone made out on the ones I parted with quite nicely. As far as that set goes, yes I am jealous if you want to call it that. I too like that kind of piece, I guess my mind just hasn't gotten to the point of thinking four edison records are worth 185.00.. But I know they are given what I see. Good for the sellers for sure.. Those were a couple bucks at best at one time. I sort of thought I would settle into perhaps Edisons as my main listening source for acoustic records, but we all know that each has its own good points, and its hard to eliminate the others and not wish you had some back..

I feel the pain, Larry!
I'm really NOT an accumulator. Most of what I have, I have hand picked for my personal collection. They're organized A-Z by artist, label, then catalog number. All this happens after I clean and re-sleeve them. It's a labor of love. The fact that I do work for a small CD company that reissues 78s and cylinders on CD plays into what I keep in my collection as well, whether I would want to listen to something or not at times. In other words, if I found an E+ copy of Julia Moody's "That Chicago Wiggle" on viva tonal Columbia (which I did just get in a collection I picked up), I probably wouldn't keep it for myself and pass it along, but if i know I may be able to get it reissued on CD, I'll keep it for that reason.
As for record listening, I listen to records constantly. I'm not really a TV viewer (unless it's Sunday night and the Sopranos are on), so I listen to records often for a couple of hours a day, more on weekends if I can't work on my yard or garden.
There are lots of records I get in collections that I've "rescued" from being tossed, usually stuff of no value whatsoever. I pass them along to other collectors in my area - IOW, "Hey, I have 10 crates of rejects in the basement, go help yourself" and they do! I accumulate to a point where I don't throw records away, ever, but when push comes to shove, they get donated to goodwill and hopefully will get a second (or third or fourth) chance.
Sean
BTW, I'll probably do an electric transfer of the sets I won on ebay and when I do, I will post them in the audio section here for anyone to download. Be on the lookout next week or shortly after.

Sean
I look forward to that posting.. I have never heard any of the edison late mulit classical sets. I talked to the old fellow near me today, that I only recently finally connected with. I mentioned them to him and he rattled of the dates that the late records were made and said that they made a number of multi record classical pieces at that point. I think the only Edison catalog I ever had was a fairly early one and was sort of falling apart.. I sold it when I cleaned out a huge collection of record catalogs last year.. You may have seen them, I sold them for over 4 months or longer.. One of the fellows that purchased a lot of the columbia ones owns a historic release record company here in Illinois. I forget his companies name, but he purchased quite a few. Like you the Salvation army and Shriners must have made a few bucks off the walls full I donated to them. I ran into another fellow near thru and ad, he has quite a number of later 78 show albums of all kinds. I like them but hard to find a reliable machine to play them on, and I really didn't want to get into them again.. But here I am.
