I wanted to listen to a CD of 20's dance tunes on my computer but I'm having a problem. I find that CDs or MP3 files saved on the computer will freeze up the computer, with the sound coming to a screeching halt or sputtering. This does not happen when I listen to an MP3 file over the internet. Any idea what might be the problem?

Rocky, does your computer use the same audio program (Media Player, Quicktime, or whatever) for playback of internet-based vs. hard disc-based audio files? If so, your problem doesn't really make sense. Perhaps if you check your hard disc for errors? Do you have a utility program like Norton System Works? My computer used to freeze up constantly until I ran it a few times. Also, I used to leave my computer on standby a lot, but I routinely shut it down completely now every night, and it's been much smoother.
One thing you might try also is to use a different audio program from the one you are running now, and see if you still have a freezing problem...(i.e. right-click on the file, and choose "open with...")

Nice avatar, Adam. I want that back. Matt You're welcome to come anytime you're in Chicago and have a listen, Matt! Do you still have my old Viva-tonal 601? Planning to come to Union? I know it's a schlepp...

Can't do Union this year - the will is strong, but the wallet and the calendar are weak...
I sold the 601 quite some time ago - unfortunately, it was damaged during shipment (I don't remember to what extent it was damaged), and the buyer got quite angry with me. I encouraged him to file a claim with the shipper, and offered to do the repairs, but then never heard from him again... I still feel bad about that one, but not sure what I could have done. That was really a fine little machine.
Next time I get over that way I'll definitely take you up on your offer to stop by for a listen. JUst don't turn your back for too long, or that 8-35 might turn up missing.... oh wait, there was that elevator issue....

Adam,
I opened a few MP3 files with Internet Explorer instead of Windows Media Player and the computer did not freeze up. However, it is not possible to use Internet Explorer to listen to a CD. I will take your advice and turn the computer off in the evening to see if this resolves the problem with the Windows Media Player.
