How come we don't get as much traffic as the OTVMMB?

Hi Paul. I guess for one, the other board has been around for alot of years (10??) so its had alot of "word of mouth" and more collectors know about it. The other reason I guess is that this board is mainly a one brand board- namely Edison. In america especially, "Victrola" seems to be used by alot of people to generalize just about any brand of talking machine including edisons, so I think when people are looking for info, and do a google search, the other board pops up. For some strange reason too, many fellow collectors have the silly idea that Edison machines are touchy and hard to "adjust", so they don't have any interest in edison machines and records.. Just like the original buyers of our collections, some would buy Edisons, some "Victrola's", and others couldn't care less, as long as the got to hear the music they enjoyed!

Gents, I think it also-more so, has to do with requiring registration. It keeps the riff-raff out but it also discourages the casual poster, lurker/reader and just plain curious. There is something to be said for both set-ups. Phonoland is also much less busy than the Vic Board. Both here and Phonoland tend to be generally more genteel and more prone to stay on-topic than the Vic Board. You can get more input over on the VB, but you must put up with a lot of chaff to get it. I like both set-ups to be honest. Things are just a bit too rough over on the VB right now for some reason, I look forward to things settling down eventually. That is why I am an adamant defender of an open board over there. There needs to be at least one spot to get a bit hurly-burly (within reason!!!!) I do admit to the occasional anonymous posting over there for humorous effect and once or twice to anonymously let a bit of air out of someone or other who needed it. I always tried to keep it from getting nasty. I am of the opinion that a number of the really rotten anonymous posting there right now is from a few individuals with a multiple agenda part of which is to try and force mandatory registration. But that, like the secretary Of Home Land Security says, is just a gut feeling. ;D Regards, J. Boy!! I'll bet that was more than either one of you asked for!

John,
Speaking of Phonoland, did you see the reply from Recordchanger regarding my answer to what type of Columbia that was? I'm not sure if he didn't get my humor or that he believes that cut in half machine really was a table model!

It is probably the Summer; there is not a lot of traffic anywhere but when colder weather comes and people are inside with their computers, I am sure that the traffic will pick up :-) At least these boards have something worth knowing about; which is a bunch more than a board about movie stars or something like that.

All this time, I thought it was becuse this board was just about Edsion Phonographs. Where as the OTVMMB, was about all antique phonogrpahs. Either that, or there are more owners, of Victor, and other 78 machines, then Edsion Machines.

It's not - it's about ALL makes/brands of antique phonographs and recordings - while it does lean towards Edison, I would never discourage anyone from posting about ANY type of machine, record, or phono-related material.

Gents, Ortho. is right as well, it's always slower around these precincts in the summer. A lot of us are spending time out-doors and traveling (or so I've heard. ) As time goes on you'll see more and more traffic here-I think. It always takes some time for word to get out about newer web-boards. As Our Fearless Leader says you can discuss any antique phonographs here. ;D I would say (excluding myself ) we've built up a pretty good panel of experts here who can answer most phonograph questions. ;D Regards, J.

I really like comming here to talk with other people, but it's hard when no one has posted anything. Maybe I need to get out more.

Give it time. People will come, and I have a gut feeling (ibid) that this may cause more interest and thus more competition for the shrinking number of machines. OH NO, WHAT HAVE WE DONE? ;

Although I signed up here several months ago, have only recently been signing in to sniff the air and see what's going on. Gotta agree with others----it's more genteel and on-topic here. I much prefer that. Generally, I'll try to think the best of people, including my fellow collectors, so it has been distressing to read so many postings on that other board that are pretty--well--- slanderous. The various political/social tirades and digs get pretty tiresome over there, too. As long as we can all be civil and discuss our shared hobby like adults, this should be a fine forum we all can enjoy and gather much information along the way. Keep the mandatory sign-in and give it time----this board will continue to grow.

I have to agree with Kirk. There is some silliness here, but usually not to the extent of viciousness. There are those over there that won't join here because they can't hide behind the anonymity of "guest" to post their scurrilous remarks.

I really shouldn't complain, the Phonoland Forum, hardly gets any traffic at all. This isn't unusal. I am a member, of two Synthesizer related boards, and the same thing happens there. One board gennerates more trafic then the other. It's usually based on they types of people on those boards. One board, seems to have more young people, and the other has older, or more mature people.
Or it's just me, and I want to talk with other people, and need to, learn that other people have lives, and I need to do the same thing.

A message board doesn't necessarily need a lot of traffic but it is good to have it there when it is needed as there are many many people, any of whom might have an answer that you might need. . .
