I've noticed that most photo's I've found of the 30's, have a brass ID tag on the inside left of the lid. Mine has the ID tag at the back of the bedplate, and is aluminium- which came first?
I also noticed in a listing for a 30, someone said there was traces of the original maroon silk fabric at the back of the grille. Did they ever come out at any stage of production with fabric?? I always thought they had no grille cloth, and that was why the inside of the cabinet was fairly well polished.

Shane,
The earliest ID tags were made of stamped aluminum with blackened highlights. The later ones were a plated metal in a bronze finish with silver highlights. The ID tags can be found in 3 places. On the inside wall of the horn compartment to the right facing you. In the upper left hand side under the lid and on the bedplate at the rear. The earliest machines 1915/16 had a brownish colored cloth glued to the back of the metal grill. The 30 I have has a ser # 59599 and the plate is inside the horn compartment to the right with a brown cloth.

Thanks Bill. Mine's ser #98476, so it probably didn't have grille cloth, but I think I'll put some on it anyway. There's not much original about the machine now, having been totally reveneered and refinished, so grille cloth will help cut down on dusting.
