Great Rocky!
I only hope the seller takes your packing / shipping advice!
I have too many horror stories related to bad packing. Recently I had two DDs sent to me packed between one square of cardboard on each side...and that was IT! I realize DDs are pretty sturdy, but, come on! One was a Mojica disc worth a few bucks. I sent the guy instructions on packing which he totally ignored.

Sean, I find that many sellers only use one square of cardboard and that's never created a problem. However, I did suggest to the seller that he double up on the cardboard prior to placing the record in a padded box. What I find scary are the sellers who use no cardboard.
I, too, have gotten DDs that were inadequately packaged. If there's one record on the face of the earth that can survive shoddy treatment, it's probably a DD........but I wouldn't want to press my luck!

Right, it's OK if they're at least in a box...these DDs I bought were just sent to me in between two pieces of cardboard taped together - no box - just the two pieces of cardboard with two DDs in between and my address slapped on the one side of one of the cardboards. Yeah, I once bought a rare 23000 series Victor scroll off ebay (at least it was cheap), and the seller sent it (after ignoring my standard instructions) wrapped in nothing but a single layer of bubble wrap, no cardboard, then crammed into a flimsy box. You can guess what I found when I opened the package. I emailed this seller in particular after getting a nice box full of pieces and asked why she didn't follow the instructions I sent her. Her answer..."too time consuming". Sellers' stupidity or ignorance is one thing, but ignoring clear and easy to follow record packing instructions is clearly another! Sean

Just got the record! Conscientious packaging! Cardboard and tape....covered in bubble paper.....placed in box with newspaper and air pillows. The record's appearance is V to V+. I can't wait till I get home to hear it!

If only they all packed them like that. I got my second broken disc last week. Just a small kids record that I didn't have the label of. It turned up in a mobile phone box. I thought that was a good sign, but opened it to find the record wrapped in one layer of crepe paper, and not even sticky taped- and thats it! No packing or bubble wrap, just air, and pieces of record that escaped the crepe paper. How dumb can some people be? At least they offered to refund the postage cost as well, which was dearer than the disc.

It just plain sucks when you lay out some bucks for a good record and it is packed so poorly that it wouldn't stand a chance. One thing that keeps my ebuyers coming back is my packing. Well over 1000 records shipped and I've never heard of a buyer having one arrived broken (knock on wood!)
I recently had a 7 inch Victor shipped to me in nothing but a padded envelope and maybe two or three sheets of printer paper wrapped around it. I almost just threw it out without opening it, figuring "no way did this make it" and well, somehow by a miracle, I opened the envelope and the disc was undamamged and in ONE piece!! Maybe Eldridge Johnson was watching over that record!

Sean, You lucked out on that one! I've written before about the one I got in a padded envelope only, it still boggles my mind that a professional shipper would do that! I really can't complain to much, I've been very lucky overall. (Knock wood) Regard, J.

Funny you should mention that Sean. I got one yesterday that had a cerial box for a sleeve, and wrapped in christmas paper. Not even a padded envolope. I was so sure it wouldn't have survived the trip across 3 states, that I had a friend photographing it as I opened it. By some miracle, it to arrived in perfect condition. I'm still wondering how. I got a DD today from the US, that was placed into a used priority mail envolope, and then into a padded one. Thank goodness it was a DD! They even charged me double the postage cost for their efforts.

Yea, postage gouging is a real problem these days. I don't mention it on the "other board" any more since one seller gets catty with me whenever I do. $6.50 Media mail shipping for ONE 78? I can't stand it. I charge $4 for up to three 10 inchers and $4.50 for up to three 12 inchers, that includes all the right materials for packing, which with some smart shopping around, you can still buy cheaply (Uline is one place that sells record shipping boxes for ~30 cents each, the nice 11x11x5 size that are basically bullet proof when packed correctly). The 30 cent price is before freight, which brings them up to maybe 40 cents each, and this is when they're having one of their "specials". I just stocked up on different sizes last month when they were having one!

Sean: Obviously your concern for customer satisfaction extends beyond what most casual sellers/shippers would consider. I too shop for bargains in materials and media and try to pass that on to others. To me it's part of the game. A satisfied customer will seek repeat business with a good seller. C.

There's a seller on Ebay whose DDs are closing in about five hours. He's charging $14.85 for shipping ONE DD. Rocky

I thought Ebay had a policy regarding exorbitant shipping costs, or am I imagining this???

I thought Ebay had a policy regarding exorbitant shipping costs, or am I imagining this??? Bill Bill, I don't know what Ebay's policy is in this regard, but they should have one. Exorbitant shipping costs are fraud--pure and simple! If they do have a policy, it would be interesting to peruse their guidelines. The chronic problem that I see with regard to Ebay record auctions is not so much "exorbitant" shipping costs as much as unreasonably high shipping costs. Maybe we should test this out! Let's all list an auction for a feather......and set shipping costs for the feather at $100.00. If Ebay has a policy, we would surely hear from them.....or would we? ;D Rocky P.S. I'm sure it would be appropriate to charge an extra $25.00 for each additional feather! ;D
