Folks,
I got an Elman Red Seal in a batch from Seattle Wash. recently. ;D It's a five line patent label (I think it's called) It has "Price $1.oo in U.S.A." around the spindle hole and "Awarded First Prize blah blah blah" across the top. It's 61182 Faust―Fantasie from Garden Scene Mischa Elman. A nice piece. Here's the curious bit. It doesn't say anything about being an imported recording as I've seen on a couple of black labeled Victors of the same era, yet it has the G & T angel stamped on the back with a large "H" and "Reg. US Pat.Off.". In the dead wax on the front "8772b" appears at the six o'clock position & 61182 followed by a crown appears at 12 o'clock. Did VTMCo. not bother trumpeting all their imported recordings?
Regards, J.

Mischa Elman! He was one of Victor's premier violinists along with Efram Zimbalist, Maud Powell and Jascha Heifetz. John, you have a common record but a great piece! It's not a G&T but the angel on the record was common on Canadian pieces.

I had a colleague who taught piano in my department, and had been Elman's accompanist on tour. He did not have very flattering things to say about him! As a person, that is.
