...and it seems to be skipping or something, making the music and/or lyrics kind of unintelligible. It's not a disc problem, because I tried a few. Any ideas of what's going wrong?
Help!

Pretty hard to know for sure what is wrong without seeing what it is doing.. But a few things to look at are if the rear block where the weight is attached is free and moves easily from side to side without effort. Often they are nearly frozen in place which effects the way the record tracks. You have to take the screw off the weight and us some penetrating oil on the pivot point till it works very easy. Then you might have a bad needle? Do you have another edison reproducer to try on it to see if it is better? Could the link to the needle be damaged or the diaphragm so bad that it just doesn't play well. It could be the gaskets that hold the diaphragm are hard and brittle and making the buzzing. Another thing to look at is if the stylus bar is level on the "Top" edge with the underside of the reproducer. If the height of the arm is off, or is the diaphragm is badly warped it could be tilted up or down and cause lousy sound. I am sure you know you have to start the record with the needle in the center of the limit loop or it will touch the edges during play and cause skipping sounds. Those are some things off the top of my head to look for, maybe some others have more?
