Just wondering if anyone has a sure fire way, tips or ideas as to how to remove, separate & replace the metal ring (eyelet?) at the centre of the turntable velvet on later machines? I've only ever attempted it twice in 30 yrs, and both times the results were less than perfect. I've always ended up putting small dents in the nickeled top ring trying to separate it from the brass washer on the underside of the fabric. I don't have to try & save the fabric, so removing the two pieces as a whole is no problem, but separating the two without damaging the domed top section is my biggest concern. I thought of a way I might be able to do it, but thought I'd ask before I go experimenting Alternatively, can new ones be bought from anywhere?

I have one of these Springs on my turntable for my Silvertone portable.... i stopped fighting this thing and i just grabbed the turntable with both hands and just gave it a good yank ... Though, If you think that's just too risky.... you could try using Plastic Coated Tools to wedge in between where the spring hugs the - what a minute..... This is not the same thing is it? I can't tell from the photo- It's fantastically small

Sorry about that :-) Come to think of it, you guys in USA probably don't come across these too often. They're usually on very late machines that have velvet on the TT instead of felt. They probably turn up more on electric machines there? There's a couple better px below, and I've removed it from the cloth. It's like a domed nickeled washer with a brass back plate. This goes either side of the fabric & is pressed to hold it to the velvet by spreading the centre of the nickeled bit over the brass washer.

Matty: I can’t say I’ve seen one of these before, but I would imagine that if keeping the fabric isn’t an issue, your best bet is probably to cut it off the fabric, then do something like what Iberville was suggesting; use a small plastic putty knife or other tool to gently pull them apart. Of course, this would also depend on how tightly they are forced together... If you do go the putty knife route, you might also find that it may help to cut and shape the blade of it, so that rather than having the square end best suited for putty, you instead have a concave shape that fits your part snugly. The more plastic you can have in contact with what you are pulling apart, the better. I imagine that plastic putty knives are cheap enough where you are that you wouldn’t mind sacrificing one or two to get an ideal tool. You could also try this without sacrificing the fabric, but if you’re not using the fabric again, it would probably be easier to just remove without trying to separate it from the fastener. — MordEth, who has carefully pried all too many fragile things apart with putty knives, plastic cards, etc.

Oh it's a grommet! That might imply that the grommet is permanently fascened to the Fabric... i figure If you can lift the turn table off, then strike the grommet through the hole from the underside may help if you haven't tried that already... i don't have much experience on this one , nor have I seen any turntables that have this But I've never seen felt Turntables either - i just have three Velvet ones good luck
