Hello all. How do I confirm that I have the correct horn for a Edison Opera model A, Type SM? The horn doesn't fit well, but I'm thinking that the horn support is just missing. Are there specific dimensions that can use to confirm it is the correct horn? Thank you. This should work to link to the photos. Thank you. picasaweb.google.com/crowtrading/Opera?feat=directlink

Crow,
Can you supply a picture? An Opera horn elbow was different in configuration than one found on a Cygnet horn. The elbow made the horn sit rather squat when in place.

Crow,
By looking at your pictures you supplied you appear to have the correct horn elbow for your OPERA. It looks though like someone ground the OD of the horn ferrule that slips into the horn stanchion. I'll post a pic of the ferrule on my OPERA later today.

Thank you Bill. That would be great. I couldn't find any photos on- line close-up enough. So the horn is correct for the Opera? What is the OD? Thank you

Definately the right horn. Great looking machine btw. OD I think is outside diametre. I guess you might be able to sleeve it, or build it back up with solder or something. Bill's a machinist by trade, so I'm sure he'll know the best way to go about it.

Hi Crow, I took two pics, one of the horn in the stanchion and a close-up of the ferrule that slips into the socket on the stanchion. I think what happened is that the plated brass collar that was applied to the tip of the elbow has become lost. It was slipped over the end and more than likely soldered on. This collar would have also added strength to the otherwise thin tin that was used for the horn halves so the horn could pivot in the socket. The outer diameter of the collar (Thanks Shane, I think in machine shop terms when most ppl don't!) should be about .872 inches. There should be enough room for the collar to swivel in the socket without binding and not too much to allow sound to escape from there. If you have any machine shops in your area, one may be willing to make one up for you. I don't know if any of the parts suppliers would have this as I've never seen one gone before. I couldn't tell from the pics, but does your horn still have the Scheip & Vandergrift Music Master Horn decal? Bill

I would try the Hornmaster himself.... Don Gfell.. If he doesn't already have one....I'm sure he knows who does. See Contact links below: Website: edisonman.com/Phone (419) 499-3093 Email: mailto:Edisonman1@aol.com ) Tony K. Edison Collector/Restorer
