And the one recording I really wanted called "Who (believed in you)" is sadly worn. It plays well, but you can start to see the lighter color in the inner rings indicating the condesite if more or less gone. I've been told this means you shouldn't play the disc for risk of damaging the stylus.
On the upside, I did received a disc of "The Midnight Waltz" on one side, and "The Vale of Golden Dreams" on the other. It's in like-new condition, no scratches, and has a beveled edge. I've never encountered a DD with beveled edge before. Anyways, it's a nice record, but I wish my copy of "Who" was in better shape.
Anyone have a copy they are willing to sell?

So much to learn about DD's. I have the book on the way and can't wait to delve into it.

I cant say I've ever seen a DD with a bevelled edge. Any chance of a picture I wonder if it suffered some kind of edge damage in production, and the disc was bevelled at the factory rather than Edisons pet hate of wasting it.

Sorry to hear of your bad luck. Who was the eBAY seller and how did he grade it? Do you think his grading was accurate or might you have bought it from someone who normally does not sell records, "estate sale find" etcetera? I would like to buy some records on eBAY but so far have hesitated because of exactly what you decribe. Thanks, Valecnik

Most of what I have been able to purchase came from ebay. As mentioned, often many are plain junk. But some have been fine. The only hope of a standard quality is to find a seller that has a large supply and continues to list. That at times can give you a bit more confidence in what your getting. Oddly most of what are said to be "collectors" things usually turn out to the be ones they didn't want. Bidding is a total crap shoot on ebay. I have paid way too much for quite a few a couple years ago. At the time records like it were selling for 20.00 and up. Now they are not getting bids often at 3.99. On the other hand, one seller had quite a few record lots a while back listed at 4.99 for 6 records. Many were the same records I had purchased for way more. For some reason not many bid and I got lots of "Perfect" records for barely a dollar a piece. I never could figure out why no one bid. Some times a sellers things are just ignored for some reason while others go completely nuts. I guess if you have the money to spend and it doesn't matter then those 500.00 electrics might make sense, but I can't see how have several thousand dollars spent and owning three or four edison records makes much sense, but lately its happening again. What I wonder is how do they know they aren't going to get worn grooves. Some of those looked a bit iffy to me in the photos, yet they went way up.

I posted this back in September 2009. Talk about resurrecting a thread!

Frank,
Have you learned anything since then? I recently complained about a bunch of records that the seller said were in very good condition. They were definitely not! Bad scratches, poor surface, and worse sound. The upside was they gave me a full refund. Any more at the price one is forced to pay often for a record, if the seller has indicated a good recording, meaning plays well, then I expect it to come pretty close to that and have no qualms telling the seller I am unhappy. I may have to throw them away, but usually I get my money back as well.

I recently recall seeing DDs on eBay with starting bids of $49.95! They were common etched labels in g+ grades. I emailed the seller stating that the discs simply weren't worth that much due to artists/content/rarity, and he replied saying how he sees them sell on eBay at those prices all the time so he saw no reason to adjust his auctions. Since then they were re-listed at $19.95 starting bids . . .they STILL won't sell! What this guy doesn't understand is that some DDs are very desireable whiles others are complete dogs! tarheel: Sorry you haven't found a better copy of "Who". That is a nice record, and the copy I have (somewhere) is pretty worn too...I think it was a little off center too, making it 'challenging' to listen to.
