The gold upholstery fabric on the C-250 grill I knew was a replacement (the thumbtacks holding it in place...as if the fabric itself was not a give-away). When I removed it, I found traces of either the original fabric or a replacement fabric that was once on the grill.
This fabric is not the gold/green silk I was expecting...but RED. All the way around the frame are remains of a tight weave red fabric with a shiny texture. It may be silk or cotton, but by appearance I'm leaning to silk.
I have some burgundy silk I used on the S-19 and LC-38 I could install. My question is, was the green/gold grill fabric used by Edison a standard color, or were there variations in the color of grill cloth used?

I know they came in a medium golden brown with texture as well as a olive green. I tired the green first and someone sent me a photo of them from English Edisons which used that color. In my home however the green while a contrast just didn't seem right so I found an interesting browish gold type fabric at walmart that had sort of random goldish streaks in it. Takes away from that all the same effect and rather mimics the textured pattern edison used, but of course not as nice. The effect is good however. I know I have seen photos of burgandy colored cloths in edisons but I don't know if they were added after the original was damaged or may have come that way?

I have an A250 in Mahogany with the original, very tattered dark dark grillcloth, looks almost black although it could have originally been a dark burgundy I suppose.
I also have a C19 in oak with the origninal grillcloth, again tattered but clearly olive green.
I also had a baby council with original cloth and I sold it several hears ago along with a William & Mary council. Both of those original grillcloths were almost black, like the dark walnut finish.

Obviously Edison offered various grill cloths from time to time. My first machine was a William and Mary Console and it had a rather light brown with a darker design worked into it in a patterned effect, was quite nice.

I finally installed some fabric behind the grill. Here are the results: I'm more than satisfied with this. It's a gold silk with black in it, and it has a nice greenish tint to it.

That grille cloth looks superb. What is it? I bought some grille cloth originally intended for my Victrola Credenza, but I guess I can use it for my mahogany Chippendale 250. I think i read in the Frow book that the oak cabinets came with green and the mahogany came with gold grille cloths.

This is just something I picked up at Jo-Ann's Fabrics. It looks more like gold than green, but when the light hits it, it gives off a greenish tint.

It looks something like the gold toned fabric I purchased at walmart too. Shiny with dark threads vertical in the pattern that gives it a bit more of an original look than a totally flat color.
From what I understand in England Edison Chippendales in Mahogany came with olive green cloth. I have a copy of an original brochure sent to me that shows the machines so I know its original.
For my own home however I found the gold more lively looking. The green gave a sophisticated look where I installed it, but after it was in the room it looked a bit drab compared to gold.
