I have an Edsion Amberol 4 minute record, can someone tell me about it? I know about the Blue Amberol's and the Gold Moulded, but this one I know nothing about. The cylinder, looks a bit moldy, but I don't know, if these cylinders, get moldy? It is, chipped on the edge, but not on the recording. The title is, "The Lord is my shepard" Miller & Croxton.
I thought I was getting 924 "War March of the Priests-Athalia" Edsion Concert Band.

Paul, The 4 minute amberols came out in 1908. They are made of a different "wax" to the 2 mins, and they are extremely brittle. Even a change in room temperature can make them split in half. Most collectors wont touch them. Even the original dealers referred to them as "Damberolas". Compared to the 2 min cylinders, the 4's had low volume and high surface noise, and they were a bit of a disappointment all round. Edison couldn't produce celluloid records due to patents, so these were what he produced instead. They can only be played with a sapphire stylus, such as a model H. They dont usually get mold damage like the 2 mins do, so you might be able to clean yours, but be mighty careful. Even sliding them on the mandrel can result in a broken cylinder. I've got quite a few of the amberols, because there's some really good songs on some, that didn't make it to the blue amberol range. Every now and then, I go to the cupboard to play some, and discover one has cracked or split in half (and it's always the good ones). I wish "Wizard records would remake these 4 min cylinders too, because some of the recording can't be had on any other format. I've never had to clean one before, but I think a VERY SLIGHTLY DAMP cloth would do the trick, followed by a soft dry cloth- but wait and see what the other fellows have to say about this first.

As Shane says, they are EXTEREMLY brittle and i have found them shattered for no apparent reason when taking them out to play, so I stay away from them like the plague. The very last 2M Edison wax cylinders were made from the same material, those are in the 10,000 range and up. The one weird thing about these cylinders is for some reason, they don't attract mold. Perhaps the material wasn't suitable for the little critters. If you need to know if a BA was on 4M wax or vice-versa, let me know and I can tell you. Also, they seem to exude a grayish film that isn't mold. This usually cleans up when you play them.

Bill, I've got a pretty long list here for you! I'd LOVE to get any of these on BA. There's a few in the 12000 series, which I think are all UK issues, so I'm not sure if you'd have any info on them.

41. A bunch of nonsense: Murray K Hill
99. My bambazoo: Collins & Harlan
113. How Algy didn't propose: Empire Vaudeville Co

182. A day at the game: Peerless Quartette
289. Flanagan & Harrigan: Porter & Meeker
777. It's got to be someone that I love: Ada Jones
871. They always pick on me: Ada Jones

Shane,
I looked over your list of Amberols--only one was available on a Blue Amberol: "It's got to be someone I love" by Ada Jones on BA 1987.

Thanks Rocky- but that's not really what I wanted to hear! Actually, after I made the list I thought I'd play a few of them. sure enough- another cracked one! So I'm going to record them, and get rid of them I think, or at least some of them anyway. I noticed a Florrie Forde 4m went for about $65 out here the other day, so I think they can go, and I'll get some more BAs, before I end up having to chuck them in the bin. I think it's time for my chinese 4m to go too. Im loosing 2 or 3 every year. Its such a shame they didnt all get put on BAs. I guess in time, most of these recording will be lost. I'm really surprised "They always pick on me" didn't go blue. I also saw a paper label DD years ago at an auction with either 'My Bambazoo' or 'Monkey honeymoon' on it, so I'm surprised it wasn't on BA too.

Shane, I love that expression "didn't go blue," referring to Amberols that weren't rereleased on BAs!
To date I don't have any wax Amberols, but I decided I should at least hear a few in person, so I'm getting two of the Amberol Specials--they were not expensive.
While on the topic of Amberols, my Model H reproducer was sounding bad, and was also starting to develop an echo. I sent it to George Vollema for a new stylus. George told me that the stylus was fine--it was merely gunked up. He cleaned it and will be sending it back. I wonder how many people would be that honest!

Also, you dont have any info on 4m-8271 by any chance? If you can supply the title, I can tell you if it was listed on the UK 23000 series, unless of course Rocky beats me to it. Bill

Well I was lucky enough to find one. I thought I had a second one, turned out to be a Gold Moulded one, and of course it's moldy. Would the Amberol play on my machine?

It will if you have an H, K,R or S and you have the smaller carrier arm. If you have a C, the stylus is too large for the groove which was cut @ 200T per sq. inch. And you have the 2/4m combination on your machine.
