I have an earlier model O reproducer with the standard weight, and read that later on they switched to the trowel shaped weight. I have an opportunity to keep mine as is,or switch out the weight for the smaller trowel weight. Curious as to the best course of action, and why... Any advice is appreciated....Thanks

Unless you plan on playing a lot of wax Amberols, I would leave it as is for sake of originality and because these reproducers are serially numbered. Put your efforts into making sure the reproducer is tuned nicely and that the stylus is turned to a fresh edge and is parallel to the groove.

Hi Jeff.
I'm with shellophone on this. Changing the weight changes the history of the artifact, for not very much extra benefit. A rebuild/tuning of the reproducer will give you the biggest bang for the buck.

Martin

Thanks... I appreciate the input from other collectors, and that makes a lot of sense. I understand that as time went by,the metal for the top was changed to cheaper pot metal also. I will use the later weight for display purposes to show the changes over time.

HI Jeff,
On the other side of the coin, I don't see any problems with changing it over if you plan on using it frequently, even for 2M wax. I'm sure any wear the was caused by the earlier weight wasn't limited to the 4M Amberol. Also, 99.9% of the people that would see this with the latter weight wouldn't know the difference anyway and if you ever decide to sell it, you can always change it back. After all, it's not an irreversible modification.

I changed mine to the trowel weight and I have no problem with having done so. Edison offered the trowel weight as a factory modification, so who's to say it wasn't done 100 years ago by TAE, Inc. I have very few 4 min wax Amberols left in my collection, but those have either above average value or a special significance to me and I want to keep them in the best condition possible, while still enjoying them. Guys, I'm with Shellophone and Martinola. If you like the trowel weight I'd suggest picking up another reproducer that already has one. (Granted they are not cheap).
EAch reproducer sounds a bit different and it's interesting to compare them. Also the round weight tracks better on some of the very loud indestructibles and gives you better sound with no wear to the record as far as I can tell.
