Please help! I have just acquired my first Edison; a W-250. I am hoping that someone can help me get it working. When I first got it, the spring from the first can was not attached to the second, and I fixed that. Now, when I crank the handle, both of the spring cans rotate and no tension is built up. If you manually hold the second can (the one next to the large gear) and keep it from rotating when cranking the handle, the phonograph builds tension. This might be a stupid question, but what am I missing? Thanks!

During the winding process, both spring barrels (cans) are supposed to turn. Without seeing your motor in front of me, I'm guessing that the other spring has become unhooked from the hook on the winding arbor. That is best case scenario with the worst being that the spring broke at some point along it's length and when this happened, the released energy of that spring caused the initial problem that you encountered. You will need to disassemble the spring barrel assembly from the motor again and inspect each one, particularly the one in question.

Thanks Bill.
I did take the motor apart again and the spring in the second can is broken about 4 inches from the end. Is there a way that the spring could be cut and a new keyhole drilled into it, or do I have to buy a new spring?
Thank you again.

Hi Gina, You could repair the spring, but in my honest opinion it would be much easier to either replace the spring yourself or send it out to a reputable repairman. If this was a rare machine with an unavailable replacement, I would make the effort to repair it. Here are several sources that offer repair services. There are others, but these are the most popular. Good luck with your machine!! Bill www.victroladoctor.com/www.antiquephono.com/www.victrolarepairservice.com/
