Paul,
You may have missed my point, forgive me if you didn't though! ;D
You can live in a "dry" place as I do (and most of us, I assume these days) do as well. What I am saying is a few humid days without AC or a dehumidifier running to help out, your cylinders do stand a chance of growing mildew. That's all I'm saying. My place is dry too, but I am very careful about making sure humidity levels don't get too high in my cylinder "place" in the house...removing the lining from cylinder boxes in my case was an extra step in the preventative measures department.

Oh, so am I. It's just that Bill, had told me not to remove the wool lining, form the inside of my Gold Moulded records, as it would not protect the cylinders. I know I could replace the linining, but that would be too much of a pain in the ass. Sorry If I missed your point, or maybe I got it, and just forgot it, or misread it. I was probably refering to the wool, that is surounding, my brown wax cylinders, where it is wraped around each cylinder indidvidually, and in a wooden box. I have central air, heat and AC (heat pump) so it stays dray in my house. However, I see where you are comming from.

Paul,
Before 1899 the Edison records do not have labels on the boxes, I do not know about Columbia except Columbia made molded brown wax records up until 1907 from what I was told. These records have the titles in the area where there are no grooves and have very deep grooves. The thick wrapping does cause mold, I have a blank that is almost white and the lining stuck to it. I also had a cabinet full of brown wax records and I could see stuff growing on them, I used a shoe brush to clean them and after a few months the growth could be seen again. It was very small and hard to see.

Thank you Steve. I have since removed the wool linning around each cylinder, and now the lid on the box, closes completely, where as before, it would stay partially open. I did play two, but with the stylus on my home phonograph, the qualtiy is not good, plus on cylinder statred to slied off. I won't play them much, so I can preserve them.

The grooves on the brown wax are not as deep so you can often hear them better with a listening tube, I used a stethoscope to make one, the volume control from an Ediphone listening tube is nice and does not transfer noise.

Thank you Sean, I played a couple on my machine. However, Bill recomends a model "B" reproducer, instead of a "C", whihc is what's on my machine.

Paul,
Looking at the hand written titles makes one believe these were owned by perhaps German immigrants? Are the spoken cylinders in English?

Bill, I don't remember? It's been quite sometime since I played one of these, so I could not tell you? I could try playing one, but since I only have a model "C" reproducer and not a Model "B", I do not want to cause any damage to them, plus one kept slidding off, the madrel. If I could find model "B" reproducer, I could try them again.
