Two repair questions:
1) for a wax Amberol cylinder with a 1/4" wedge of the surface removed, is there any way to patch that area (so the stylus won't be wrecked) and have it track? What material works best?
2) for a BA with a skipping groove, I remember getting LPs to track by using a pin to re-excavate the groove, will this work on a BA?

Hi Jeff,
I have used melted black crayon to repair needle drops on the 2M wax cylinders with pretty good success. As far as the harder and more brittle 4M "damberols," plus the rather large area damaged on yours,I don't think the crayon will work. There is a fellow out there who is a dentist and he does repairs on the 2M cylinders but I'm not sure if he does anything with the 4M Amberols. His name escapes me at the moment but perhaps someone here can help you out with it. As far as a hung groove on a BA, this usually means that the stylus has dug down past the celluloid and I haven't found anything that really works or lasts to correct this problem.

I too have a few early wax cylinders with hairline cracks along the length of the cylinder. I tried to push a couple onto the mandrel and they broke in half to my horror. What is the best way to stabilize these from cracking. Would Supa Glue from the inside of the cylinder work ?? these cracks are only hairline so it would not seep through to the groves. Regards Peter

Hi Peter.
I have used super glue in the past to stabilize 2M cylinders that had a tight crack that didn't go the entire length of the cylinder with fairly good success. These were on the the early formula wax though and not the late ones that used the same material as the 4M Amberols. There may be a slightly audible "click" during play however.

The cylinder repairman is Dr. Michael Khanchalian of Pasadena, California. His office # is (626)793-0279. Please be advised that cylinder restoration work of this calibre does not come cheap!
