As we all know, some early copies of BA 1560 have a spoken introduction. I'm wondering if anyone knows at which mold number the introduction was no longer included on the cylinder. Is it only mold no.1 that had it?

There was another 1560 that was a direct recording which was released w/o announcement. I had a copy of this with a beveled edge and it was markedly different than the previous issue. The release date of this cylinder is unknown according to Sutton.

Do you know the take numbers of both versions? I'd imagine they are different?

Obviously, the copies of BA 1560 with a spoken announcement were taken from the mold for wax Amberol No. 18. We've discussed previously that the first 50 wax Amberols had spoken announcements.
Bill mentions that there's another '1560 sans annoucement that's a different recording. As for the one with the annoucement, might this also have been released with the annoucement removed?

Rocky Rocky, I have had several of the announced 1560s over the years and all were flat tops from the original 4 M wax molds. The one I have currently is take 2 mold 122 and also says "Coon Song" on the top. I never paid attention to the take & mold #s on the beveled edge one I had but it didn't have the derogatory statement on the rim like the earlier ones and the tempo & orchestra were completely different. I also have it on a 2M Indestructible and a 2M Edison wax, both by Arthur Collins. Bill

I can throw a wrench in here...I have a NON announced flat edge version of this and my announced BA of it is of the beveled edge variety. I have a feeling both molds were used at the same time and kept in use for awhile. I remember reading that it was said the announced version was used after the non-announced mold wore out, but it doesn't seem to be the case. Like you Bill, I have this also on Indestructible and 2 minute wax. I even have a clean 4M wax of it, announced, of course and with its box and top. I used to grab every version of this I could find!

What take & mold # is your flat-top and does it include the derogatory stamping? I believe the one with the racial epithet is from the 4M Amberol molds. It was Collins' "signature" song and one has to wonder how many were pressed in their various forms I wish now that I hadn't sold the bevel edge version that was so vastly different from the earlier ones. It is also unfortunate that there are no records found at this time that list the cut-out date of BAs.

Hey Bill,
I'll check when I get home later today. I can't be certain without looking but I think the flat edge one I have says "coon song" on the rim. I'll check them when I get home and report back.

While on the topic of "Preacher and the Bear," let me note that there are six recordings of this by Collins available at the University of California cylinder site.

OK here's what I have:
My flat edge BA has six dots and a 19 after the PAT'D notice. This is the unannounced version.
My beveled edge announced version has two dots and a 65 after the PAT'D notice.
NEITHER one has Coon Song on the edge.
Sooo, what does this all mean? I'm leaving it up to the cylinder guys to get into this!

So both Bill & your take 2's have the announcement, but your take 6 does not. I only have the 4 min wax version, which is take 5. I was hoping to work out which one's have more chance of being announced, so it looks like any take 2 on any BA is probably a safe bet.
