Anyone have a clean copy of 'Oh By Jingo' by the Premier Quartet on a BA for sale? OBL & slip preferred. Thanks! Luke W.

I have it on DD 50666 but not on BA. That came out in 1920 so I doubt it came with a record slip. That practice was pretty much done with by 1914.

Good to know! Thanks Bill! I hereby drop the slip requirement. I have it on DD, too, but my BA copy is noisy. I'd like a cleaner copy. Luke W.

Luke, no matter how good a copy you get, don't expect to be able to understand the bizarre language of the natives! ;D I love that line where the guy rambles on for a minute and his words are interpreted as "He says yes."
The Premier Quartet's "Oh By Jingo" has been the topic of some disagreements on the other Board and elsewhere. Some claim that Billy Murray is present on the recording. However, I do not hear his voice. The record is also included in an on-line list of Premier Quartet recordings without Billy Murray. Murray signed an exclusive contract with Victor that took effect on July 1, 1920, at about the same time that the song was recorded. Unlike the contracts that he signed and subsequently renewed from 1909 thru the end of 1918, the 1920 contract did not leave him at liberty to record for Edison.

The coupling date for DD 50666 was April 4 1920 and the R side was Hen & Cow by Murray. This of course doesn't mean it was recorded on that date. Cylinder 4041 was dubbed from the DD master but wasn't released until Aug 1920. I can't discern Murray's voice either on my DD and usually you can pick him out quite readily. It is possible that he did sing a minor role in the song and can't be picked out as it may have been recorded before his switch to Victor as Rocky states. According to the Billy Murray biography, this song was released on a number of different labels in 1920, and credits Murray singing this solo! on the following labels. Emerson 10177, Medallion 8179, Canadian Victor 216141 and Gray Gull H-2011. Not owning any of these, I can't attest to the veracity of the book.

Here's the list of Premier Quartet records that do not include Billy Murray. www.denvernightingale.com/discography/premierqt.htmlOn the one hand, the intro to this discographic compilation states that Murray did not participate in Premier Quartet recordings as of March 1920. On the other hand, the Murray discography in his bio does include this record. Whether this is purposeful or simply a knee-jerk Premier Quartet=Murray assumption, I can't say with certainty. Whatever the case may be, it is fascinating how Murray pops up everywhere! We may never have a discography that is 100% complete. Rocky

I've got this one on BA too, but I agree with PhonoPhil - it's a favorite.
That discography over at "denvernightengale" (the one for which Rocky provided the link) states that Billy Jones is singing the lead on this recording. That sounds right to me.

I have a very clean Blue Amberol copy of this song and although it is not for sale , I would be glad to copy it to cd for you . Playack machine would be my Amberola A1 , recording it to Ampex Grand Master tape with an Electrovice 635 A microphone , then converting the tape recording to digital using professional A to D convertors .
Let me know if this interests you .

Ok, now I want to hear what the heck you guys are discussing here? Anywhere that it is linked to a MP3 that you know of?

John E. -- Thanks for the offer, but I don't need a digital copy . . . just a clean original like yours. Please let me know should you ever find another clean one. I already have it on BA and DD, but my BA is a bit scratchy for my taste.
Larryh -- This website has a number of mp3 files of cylinder recordings, but I haven't been able to get it to load for the past couple of days. Perhaps it is down for maintenance. There is also good cylinder identification info here, too.

Luke W: Did you ever find this cylinder? If I have a copy (take 1, mold 22) in great shape (but no OBL). If *I* own fewer than 300 cylinders total, it should be relatively easy to hunt down. Edit note: Change from "less than" to "fewer than." I pride myself on being grammatically correct

Coyote, Thanks for your reply. No, I haven't found another copy yet, but you've caught me at a bad time . . . I'm leaving for Florida on Tuesday and will be gone 4 months traveling there so won't have a reliable address to which one could ship. I plan on attending the Orlando show on Friday in case you will be there, too. Other than that, if you are in no hurry, I could pay you now and have you send it to me in April. Please PM me with the particulars. Thanks! John M
