Subject: Anyone know how to control speed on an Amberola 75 ?
I just lubricated/oiled my Amberola 75 the other night, and it seems like it is playing a few bars fast..
The speed of these Amberola's 30.50,75 were usually set by the factory gearing.
Any way to slow it down a notch? It seems it is working "too well"..lol..
I picked up the machine about two weeks ago and started cleaning it up.
Anyone know of any way to adjust the speed somehow?
I've had machines in the past run too slow, but never too fast! Especially a "geared" amberola..
Is there any type of speed adjustment under the bedplate that I am missing?
Thanks,
Tony K.

Tony,
Your Amberola 75 speed is adjusted underneath the gear cover. Remove the two screws that hold down the gear cover and lift it off. You will find a screw that is under spring tension connected to the yoke that has two pads and pushes against the governor flywheel. Backing off the screw will speed it up as it pulls the felt pads away from the flywheel as it expands on the springs. Your BA should revolve at 160 rpm and this can be determined by putting a piece of paper at the end of the mandrel hanging out a bit (you can either have it under a cylinder or tape it to the end) and turn the machine on. Once it get's up to running speed and using a watch with a sweep hand, you can time it by letting the paper hit you finger as it turns 40 times in 15 seconds. You may have to turn the set screw to achieve the proper timing. This method will give you the approximate speed for your cylinders.

I'm going to pickup one of those myself! What happens where you run out of the reflective strips? Last night, I adjusted the speed correctly on my Amberol 30, and it sounds perfect, but alas, my Amberola 75 has some kind of weird Echoong going on. It sounds really eerie!! I think that I am summoning all th ghosts in my neighborhood when I play a BA on my 75 now. There is obviously something wrong, and it's not the speed any longer. What causes Echoing? A Bad/worn diamond? Sounds like I need a reproducer rebuild.. but I probably could get away with just changing a stylus.. Is a stylus change easy on the DD Reproducer.. It does not look to bad, as I have never done one. Any Suggestions??? Anyone know what is causing this weird Echoing?? Signed, Help. )

Signed, Help. ) The echo you are hearing is a sure sign that the diamond is worn. Changing the stylus on the Mod. B & C Reproducer for the Amberolas is the same as on a DD Reproducer. If you do a search on this board, you will find explicit instructions on how to perform a rebuild. I get my styli from here www.victroladoctor.com/If you send him your old stylus, he will do a core exchange which will reduce your final cost. He will also have the gaskets that you should replace as well as the originals are dried out. Bill

I must report! I bought two of those LCD Digital off of Ebay for $14.00 bucks a piece, and all I can say is that its the Cat's meow!!!! It measures the RPM's on the machine to the decimal point. You will never get the speed of a machine adjusted more accurate! I highly recommend one! Thorw the old paper stroboscopes away!!! You will never waste time using one again... Trust me on this!!

I'm going to pickup one of those myself! What happens where you run out of the reflective strips? Tony, What I did for timing my cylinder machines is I used a non-playable BA and stuck a small piece of the reflective strip on the runoff area. I use this cylinder to time all my machines. As for disc machines, I stuck a piece of the tape to a small magnet (most TTs are steel) and then put the magnet at the outer edge of the TT top. If the TT is made of a non magnetic material, you can always slip a piece of the strip under a record and just aim down on the strip as it rotates. There was plenty of spare adhesive back strips that came with my tachometer so you shouldn't run out. Bill

Yeah, I was wondering where you get extras of those, Though they really give you enough in the package to last forever pretty much. I put the piece of reflective strip on the run off area of a Black 4-minute Indestructible cylinder. It works perfectly to gauge the RPM's of the machine.. I could not be happier.
The digital RPM Tach is the way to go....No question....and it's cheap!
I have not even though of trying it on one of my Diamond disc machines yet.. lol.. That should be fun...!
