That's a very odd stylus-holder, I've never seen one like that. In any case, don't despair, it's possible to make your own recording stylus from thin glass rod, as detailed by Eric Reiss in The Compleat Talking Machine. I've had a go myself, you can see and hear the results on this forum thread (I'm also McTodd there): forum.talkingmachine.info/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=9094It is also possible to get new sapphire cutting styli, but they are flat-faced and, by all accounts, not as effective as the original Edison styli, which had a 'cupped' face (as displayed at the bottom of Page 2 of the above thread). Something you really will need if you experiment with recording - a cylinder shaver. Without a way to shave cylinders there is absolutely no point trying to record, because as soon as you make a test recording you've no way to shave it and use the cylinder again, which would be tremendously wasteful and expensive. On Page 3 of the above thread, you'll be able to see a shaving machine I built from parts of an Edison Standard and bits of scrap. I would have been sunk without it.

Edison Restorer 64, Although I'm not completely certain, I think your recorder is one of the very late ones for recording 4 minute records. They don't pop up all that often. The 4 minute example I have is similar in the gasket surrounding the diaphragm but differs with the method of anchoring the small end of the stylus holder. In the photo, the stylus sure looks to be smaller than a 2 minute type. I don't know if that helps or hinders your plans, but at least may explain why it looks different. Best Regards, Martin
**EDIT*** Could this have been a special recorder for the Ambrola ICS machines? Hmm...

If you don't want to make your own cutting stylus contact Paul Hodgson at Expert Stylus Co on info@expertstylus.co.uk - they are the greatest!
I think Martin is right regarding the four minute question. There looks to be some traces of colouring on the recorder top and the four minute ones had a green dye. Having said that the cutter mount is quite different from that in the Frow book. Could it be a non-Edison replacement, a later modification or an ICS cutter as suggested?

The diaphragm and holder are from an Edison business machine, and is for 150tpi, or 4m recording.
