Hello, Very glad to find this forum and make some new friends. I just purchased an Edison Standard and am looking forward to learning and enjoying it. I was wondering if there are some good sites to purchase cylinders? Please share Blessings, from West Virginia Neil

Neil Welcome! I can suggest a few sources for cylinders. First, watch Craigslist. Cylinders routinely show up there. Sometimes, you can find large numbers of cylinders with machines. Ebay is another source where you can occasionally find good buys. Ebay prices tend to run higher than what I've seen on Craigslist, though. Usually, I only watch Ebay if I'm looking for a specific title and willing to pay a little more. Lastly, check out Kurt Nauck's auction site at: www.78rpm.com/He typically has a broad selection of cylinders, both 2-minute and 4-minute. I have found his grading of cylinders and records condition to be spot-on, and sometimes, you can find desireable titles that go for minimum bids. Nauck is also a good source for rare titles. Hope you enjoy your Standard. John

Hi WVtrumpet, I have bought every phonograph and nearly every record that I have on eBay. It's a great place to buy BUT...you need to know a little bit about the items you wish to purchase BEFORE placing bids. You also need to decide upon the maximum bid you are willing to place and STICK TO IT. I've been buying & selling on eBay for 11 years now but I still approach every potential purchase with caution. Read the descriptions and examine the photos carefully. Avoid items with no photos and make sure the shipping price is reasonable. Check the sellers feedback. I don't go anywhere near a seller with less than 95%.
If you can avoid last minute.. "panic" bids and stick to your guns, you can get some great deals. When it comes to records my collecting is focused on early (pre-1907) Victor disc records that I play regularly on my super nice Victrola VV-VI. I have just under 300. So I confess...I don't collect cylinder records, I just wanted to have around a dozen Edison records to play on my Edison Home and another dozen or so Columbia records for my Columbia Type-B "Eagle".
I refused to pay more than $8 for a really clean, fungus free, Edison, 2 minute, Black Wax Cylinder record and that's including the S/H! Did I mention that the record has to come with a brand appropriate box/holder? Yes indeed, I've lost many, many auctions but the ones I won were great deals. I've bought a handfull of records from Nauck's Auctions but otherwise 99% of my machines, parts and records came from eBay.
Best of luck and much enjoyment to you and your newly acquired Edison! Erich
