Bill, My understanding is that the core was plaster-of-Paris and gypsum with Asbestos not being one of the ingredients. Others claim that it is. To be on the safe side, it would probably be prudent to ream cylinders outside and wear a mask. Asbestos is absorbed through the respiratory tract and not the skin. Still, I would advise a good hand washing afterward.

PS: I'd wear a mask if I was reaming anything white that's 100 years old... Just a word to the wise.. I would not worry about the Asbestos anyway, It would not hit you for at least another 10-15 years anyway...!!!!!!!LOL!!!!!!! That's plenty of time for more phonograph fun...!!!!!!!
Play it safe, Wear a Mask when reaming Blue Amberols.

Also it is very easy to crack the plaster when reaming, so keepo the pressure low and clean the reamer frequently. I use a small wire brush to get the dust out. Be careful about overdoing it! I have learnt by my mistakes and have marked a ring round the reamer to show when I have got to the correct size.
Tony is right about using a mask - the dust hangs in the air for a while.
