Ran my left index finger into the blade of a tablesaw at work yesterday morning and spent two hours in surgery at a hand clinic. Didn't sleep well last night because of the pain. Took today off and hit a few antiques shops. Picked up a C-19 with a number of good paper label dance tunes inside and . . . (drumroll) . . . a gold Edisonic reproducer! Even unrebuilt it'll blow you out of the room. Picked up the whole shootin' match for $225. Been playing through a stack of good DD's all afternoon. I feel better now!!! Luke W

Congratulations Luke! What a great find! At the prices that dance band DDs are going for these days, you might have gotten you money's worth on the records alone. As for the gold Edisonic, I saw one go for over $400 a few days ago. Hope you heal quickly! Rocky

Thanks for the good wishes. Edisonics are so damned hard to find anymore. I haven't had one for years.

Very nice consolation! Congratulations. That sound like a really fantastic find! I'm very happy for you (On the second part of the story ). Regards, J.

Neo -- I've worked with power tools for over thirty years (I make my living with them) and this is my first serious mishap. Like any good accident, I simply didn't see it coming and it happened very quickly, but I had all day to think about it at the trauma center and the hand surgeon, so I know what I did wrong. First, I was working in a room in which I was in the process of rewiring the overhead lighting, so I effectively had no light. It was dim morning light through the windows, so I set up a 4' double fluorescent fixture on it's side on a nearby worktable and pointed it towards me and the saw -- poor lighting. Last week, I bought a pair of bifocal safety glasses. I've liked them for most things, but the vision "jump" between the lenses takes some getting used to, and I was wearing these while working. I was gang-cutting forty identical pieces and had eight to go. I was clearing some of the the pieces from the table and I heard "kung" when my hand tapped the blade. The cut went slightly diagonal through the first joint of my finger starting at the tip all the way to the nail base and compound fractured the bone in the first joint. It also ripped meat from the tips of my index finger and thumb. I guess I was reaching down with those three fingers to grasp a piece of material and grabbed the blade instead. Poor lighting and poor vision because of the safety glasses. The hand surgeon told me it could have been worse, at least I didn't lose any digits. I play stringed instruments and this is the start of the festival season so I guess I'll have to sit this one out, dang it all anyway. Ironically, just a couple of weeks ago, I ordered a SawStop tablesaw and I was cut while waiting for it to be delivered! Check out "The Hot Dog Demo" on their website www.sawstop.com. I bought this saw because I just turned 50, my eyes aren't so good anymore, and I've been beating the odds for a long time. The finger is all wrapped up in a fat splint and I go back in two weeks for a second assesment and stitch removal. I am fortunate that we have some of the best hand surgeons in the country right here. Thank you all for your good wishes. You never see the one that gets you! Luke W

LW, I know how tools can get ya. After retiring from a local PD, I went back to my 1st trade, machining. A lot has changed since I was in the trade, the advent of CNCs, etc. But on the other hand..........(pun intended) you may have not found your C-19 et al. if not for the injury. The Edisonic(New Standard) really brings out that 250 horn and I have to use the mute ball on mine on occasion so as not to cheese off the neighbors! Hope you have a speedy recovery and no permanent damage done.
Bill

MG -- Thanks for the healing vibes! The Edisonic really is an amazing thing. It reminds me of when I began to replace my vinyl albums with CD's back in the 1980's . . . it was like hearing them all anew for the first time. This reproducer really brings out the best in Diamond Discs! Luke W.

Luke,
Like I said OUCH! Glad it wasn't as bad as I'd first thought. That Sawstop is amazing! "Never saw anything like that before. Sure beats my old, old, cobbled Craftsman! ;D
Good thoughts and prayers for a speedy and complete recovery!
Regards, J.

The inventor of the SawStop should get a Nobel Prize or something. The blade disappears so fast its like a magic trick! Mine cost $4100 with the long fence rail and a 5hp motor delivered to my local Woodcraft store. Cheap compared to what Tuesday co$t, and even moreso had I lost fingers. $4100 . . . a bargain!

Oh yeah! Today the missus and I detailed our deck and repotted all the containers. It was a stellar day weather-wise, so I wheeled the new DD outside with us and we played 51K and 52K series records all day long as we worked. Wifey has a beautiful voice and we sang along with a lot of the records. It was a BEAUTIFUL day!!! Also, the throbbing has finally stopped. Great day to be alive! Luke W

Luke,
Sounds like a grand day! If it would stop raining here I might tackle my yard (read: jungle!) and bring one of the portables down there with me.

Luke, sorry for your accident involving a power saw. I guess the upside is the finding of the new machine! Sometimes things are relative, I recall a table saw accident in the paper here a number of years ago where the fellow leaned to far over the saw. Well lets just say your at least fortunate to have 9 more that still work right. I read about some kind of follow up reattachment, but I doubt the outcome was a happy one...

Larry -- I didn't lose anything, just split my fingertip in two all the way to the nailbed and fractured the bone. What remained of the bone has been pinned together and to use the hand surgeon's term, my fingertip has been "approximated". Not good news to an active musician, but I'll still be able to use it after it heals (I hope!).
