Ignorance of the law is no excuse with Mr. Murphy. He stopped by to remind me of this after I finished getting my refurbed C-19 greased, re-installed and ready for playing. Sounded great on the first disc, went back to wind it again and had the winding crank break off in my hand. The threaded tip is broken off and in the machine, recessed below the collar where it threads into. I have tried drilling it out, with little success. Can this part (the crank receiver) be replaced? I can find whole salvaged motor assemblies here and there but the bed plate on mine is particularly nice.

Sorry to hear about your trouble. You should be able to extract the broken off stud by drilling a hole smaller than the diameter of the stud, then using an ez-out (or screw extractor) of a size appropriate to the drilled hole. The broken off stud should not be extremely tight since not much torque was used when screwing in the crank, and only the reverse spring pressure when winding. I have done this many times and always successful. I'd be surprised if you couldn't get it out. Just be patient. You don't want to break off a drill bit or the ez-out since these would be harder steel than the stud.
Good luck!

You might try taking it to a garage, particularly one which works on older cars. Broken studs are the stock in trade of motor repair people and they will have your boroken shaft out in a jiffy.
Hope it helps!

Success! I have now completed my first extraction. Next stop dental school. Replacement crank works a treat. Now everything looks and operates as it should. Thanks friends for your help.
