Greetings- just joined and have a new project. I used to have a Standard but sold it a while back. That machine was in decent shape so I didn't have to do much to it. I collect 78s and have various disc machines and while sorting that collection recently, I came across a couple cylinders and Edison catalogs and got it in my head to get another cylinder machine- that plus a rough week at work and I ended up with another project. I'm a fan of Cygnet horns and have been wanting to try recording cylinders for a while so the strong motor and Cygnet bracket on this seemed like a good setup but I'm a bit uncertain of where to start. 1- I like originality but is this bedplate too rough to bother? I'm working out of town or I'd already be at it with the white GoJo cream, cleaning it up. Is nigrosene/shellac, etc. sufficient to stop the rust from coming back? I have POR-15 from working on my VW bus- maybe an undercoat is in order? 2- I've had the 'Compleat Talking Machine Book' since high school and it mentions that Triumph feedscrews are fine-threaded. I am wondering what the best de-rusting bath would be for this one? I've been using vinegar on my 1890s bicycle parts but maybe something gentler/commercially made? Best soft brush?

I would soak the feed screw in kroil, for a week and the other rusty parts, The sliding parts like the backrod, I would polish with a wheel and rouge. You might try cleaning the paint carefully with gojo (no pumice) and then polish with a soft cotton cloth, and Liquid Gold, I think you would be surprised and you would save the striping and decals.
