The City of London Phonograph and Gramophone Society "Masters Series" form a collection of indestructible 4-Minute cylinders featuring the very best from the Edison Grand Opera and European catalogues which, as far as we know, have never before been issued in an indestructible cylinder format. Each cylinder is hand-made exclusively for us by the Vulcan Phonograph Record Company in their Sheffield workshops and, in normal use these records are unbreakable and unwearable. The CLPGS "Masters Series" provides the opportunity for all 4-minute phonograph owners to obtain rare and fragile recordings that can be played as frequently as you wish without fear of wear or damage.
These are available for £45.00 each plus postage (£35.00 each to members of the CLPGS).Full details and ordering can be found on the CLPGS web site:

The first two issues (MS 1 and MS2 ) are
MS 1 - Abschied from "Lohengrin"
Born in Riga to German speaking parents in 1873, Karl Jörn debuted in America at The Metropolitan opera in January 1909. Although never more than a footnote in operatic history, this 1910 recording of the Act III monologue from Lohengrin clearly demonstrates Jörn's vocal powers, aided by the astonishingly clear Edison recording. Originally issued on Grand Opera Wax Amberol No. 40025 in July 1910.

MS 2 - "La Traviata" and "Rigoletto"
Two 2-minute selections dating from 1906 on one cylinder; the husband and wife team of Gustav and Scarphy Resky perform Verdi's "La Traviata" taken from a mint cylinder belying its 107-year old vintage, coupled with Florencio Constantino performing the well know La Donna E Mobile from "Rigoletto". Born in 1869 in Spain, Constantinio made and lost a fortune before dying in poverty in Mexico in 1919. Here he sings with easy grace and charm in an aria for which he was justly famous. The Act II duet from La Traviata is from record no. B 14 and La Donna E Mobile is from record no. B4. Both dating from 1906, these recordings are taken from the Edison Two-minute Grand Opera catalogue.
