I have an Edison Triumph I can't get to play. Replaced all three springs with new, cleaned everything. It turns the mandrel & will play with just the reproducer on it. When I put the witches hat on, it sits too heavy on the cylinder & stops. I can adjust the follower nut to keep it from being too heavy on the cylinder. Then it sit too heavy on the follower nut and stops. Both as though I was stopping the governor. Any ideas what my problem is, or any adjustments I can make?

Hi:
There are a number of different factors that might cause the problem: governor adjustment; belt tension; end bearing adjustment (if the phonograph has an endgate); slight stiffness or play in the mandrel bearing (if it has no endgate); wear in the gears, etc. Even with a powerful motor like the Triumph, it doesn't take much to slow it down.
Basically, one has to keep fiddling with the little details to get the motor in the 'sweet spot'.....
Hope this has been of some help.

Thanks for the help. I'll keep trying. The mandrel is loose enough to spin without the belt on. I'm not sure about governor adjustment though.
