Gents & Lady,
I picked up the S-19 and the Odd Duck today. My parents thought renting a truck was a waste of money so I went down with my father Weds. and they are driving down later today to pick up the VV-X's. They'll drop them off here Friday.)
Well the S-19 sounds fantastic. The reproducer looks and sounds good, no scoring of the dead-wax. The bad news, while moving it for me the seller pulled off the back legs and all. Everything's back in place, but I'll have to re-glue it all. The finish is very bad. What do I use the remove the finish on Edison cabinets? Denatured alcohol? How do I clean the bed plate of heavy grease? BTW I figured out how to raise the horn-tonearm assembly all by myself! ;D Matt I'll be needing a grille & frame as well as a crank escutcheon and maybe a crank (both gold) I'll be in touch via private message soon.) What do you guys recommend to refinish it shellac? Even the inside of the lid is flaking.
Now the Odd Duck, it's a home-brew frankenphone . It looks like a portable motor with a broken of unhooked mainspring. I can't even find a ratchet pawl, it just has a small spring with a little tab that hits the frame. It looks like it was longer and fit into a depression in the frame but it broke. The tonearm is a lateral/vertical job that looks like it's not very airtight. This thing must have eaten records for breakfast. The reproducer is about an inch and a half from the spindle at the end of it's arc. I'm going to have to attempt to build a whole new phonograph in it. I think I could fit a small Victor motor in there as well as using a Victor taper-tube if I built a new motor-board. Opinions-please be kind! Oh the lid was originally hinged on the narrow side over the door opposite the horn opening.
Regards,
J.
