Hello To All,
I’m back again with yet another question. I have been rebuilding my Amberola 50 that I mentioned in the last post. I have taken it completely apart, cleaned, greased and oiled and now am attempting to reassemble. I now have two very small questions.
1. I want to grease the two springs but am a little unsure about how to do it. I noticed that there is a small screw on each barrel. I’m guessing that I have to remove these screws to grease but am afraid to remove the screws in case they are holding the spring in place. There is also a small wedge tapped into a hole. Is this the proper method to grease these springs? 2. My second question is a little different. I have managed to find a parts list, price list and owners manual. Does anyone know where I might get a picture of the parts, a blow up of the machine showing all parts or a schematic? This would be very handy in rebuilding. I have managed to get one for my Home, Standard & Gem but not for the Amberola 50. Once again thank you to all that have helped me along. I have learned a lot and am continuing to learn from you. My experiences with the old cylinder phonographs have been both fun and rewarding. I look forward to hearing form you again and promise that some day I will be able to help others.
Respectfully, Tim O’D

Hi Tim,
The screw in the barrel is indeed for adding grease. You wind the spring up, remove the screw, and injected new grease from a small tube. The original tubes were about 1" wide, and 3 1/2" long. Half a tube was added to Amberols, and a full tube added to Diamond Disc's. The tubes aren't marked with a weight or volume, but half a tube would be around 1 1/2 - 2 teaspoons.
It's usually best to remove the spring from the barrel, clean it & reinstall it, as the old grease can dry out, but if the spring doesn't creak or thump, you should get away with just adding a little fresh grease.

Tim & All,
I'm also learning about an Amberola 50, although I haven't done any work on mine yet; I've only played records! ;D
The motor on my 50 runs smoothly and steadily, and it will play several records on a single winding. I do have a question regarding greasing the springs though.
When I am winding up the springs (and only when winding), I do hear a small amount of irregular spring movement - jumping - or whatever you might call it. This never happens when playing. It is most noticeable when I am winding briskly (not frantically.) (I always slow down and wind more gently as I begin to feel tension on the spring.)
Is this an indication that my springs should be cleaned and greased? Has anyone else experienced this?
Thanks for any advice anyone cares to offer.

Jerry,
What you are hearing is the spring coils snapping apart, more than likey due to the old grease causing them to stick together. At some point you may hear this happen too as the springs uncoil as the machine plays. You may want to clean & regrease the springs at some point.

Hey 3Victrolas! Any chance of getting a higher resolution scan of that booklet? It looks really great but kinda hard to read. If you could email it to me or post it here I'd make a pdf to share with the community. Thanks!

I'm sorry to tell you that our friend Sharon ("3 Victrolas") passed away last year. I'm sure she would have been happy to help.

My Golden Oak Amberola 50 is in Pristine condition, I have never had a machine run quieter or smoother.. No problems with mine. My Amberola 75 runs pretty smooth too, but I need a new stylus for it... (
