Hello I am new to this forum. I have a Edison Standard early model B with the banner decal. Here is the problem. The lid has been half striped to bare wood. The case is in real nice shape and has that great dark patina that comes with a hundred years of age. It had a front mount crane at some time that has damaged the banner decal. All that remains of EDISON is E--SON. I ordered a reproduction water slide decal with hopes of cutting out the missing letters and fitting them in. I was shocked to find out that not only was the color of the new decal off but the size of font was too small. I guess i could strip the whole machine down but i just don`t like that new golden look you see on refinished phonos. Any ideas

I'll let someone else address the cabinet finish replacement, but water slide decals are way inferior to varnish transfers (which are what were originally used). VT's have almost no thickness to them opposed to water slides which stand out from the surface. Varnish transfers have a rather short shelf life unless you coat them with decal solution (available at hobby/craft stores). Here's the contact info for phonographic varnish transfers:

I think he has a webpage, too, but I don't have it in my records.

Greg does not make varnish transfers, they are water slide decals. In fact no one to my knowledge makes true varnish transfers anymore. APSCO used to sell them but the design was not rue to the original. Gregs are made from digital photos of original transfers, and are as exact as one can get. I used to make them myself. Correctly applied and finished, they are invisible. Dave Jolley

Keep applying coats until you get the right tint. Walnut stains are usually darker.
