Ok don’t know what I am doing but I am the proud owner of a Home model with a 2/4 min capability.
Having trouble playing in 4 min mode. Slide the screw cylinder into the 4min position but it still makes the stylus skip. What am I not seeing? Plays fine until the stylus is pulling or the thread is pushing the stylus.

I'm going to use different terminology to describe parts.
The 2/4 gearing on a Home is contained in a planetary gear system that is built into the pulley. Sliding the smaller inner section on the right side of the pulley in or out engages (to the left) or disengages (to the right) a smaller gear that acts something like the overdrive on an automobile and halves the rotation of the inner sliding section. This section also has two slots that engage two pins on the feed screw in 2 min. mode, so in 2-min. mode the feedscrew is actually being direct driven from the pulley. The feed screw is held in place by a small L-shaped spring that rides in a groove milled into the feed screw. Some Homes have a lever actuated 2/4 mechanism; others do not. Take a look and see if all the components I describe are there and moving freely. A photo would help.
You should be able to see the feed screw visibly speed up and slow down when the shift is made between 2 and 4. 4 is slower.
Let the board know what the status is and we can all jump in to help.

Dave,
Does your HOME have an endgate that you have to open to slide the cylinder on the mandrel? If so, you have either a Mod. A or B (the A will have a speed control above the bedplate.) If you don't have an end gate, you have a Mod. C or later. The Models A through C used a combination attachment that Edison offered to upgrade these machines when the wax 4M Amberols came out in 1908. This will be attached to the left rear carriage rod stanchion and will have a lever to switch it from 2 to 4M. The Models D & E were made for the 2/4 M mode from the factory and were activated by pulling or pushing the smaller inner disc that goes inside the upper belt pulley. These had a decal on the bedplate that told you in which direction the gear change mechanism was positioned for the 2/4M mode. It is quite possible that the gear change isn't completely engaging when the inner disc isn't all the way out for 4M mode, depending on which model machine you have, either switch for the A,B, or C or the manually pulled out disc for the D & E.
